What do you think? Any better suggestions for UK alternatives?
I am on a £350 budget---ish😀
Thankyou very much in advance
as I decided not to "waste" money on customs, I have ordered trafos from AE

What chassis/enclosures are you using?

I dont know yet
either it will be wood, and I build something myself
should I use premade "steel", I would take a ModuShop from Italia
A couple of their cheaper Galaxy might work

I was looking at the galaxy. Bit pricey when you factor in shipping to UK. However, very nice. But the Transformer and Valve set from AE blows my budget straight away.🙁
Wonder if Santa will donate to the cause🙄
maybe you have looked at C-core trafos
IE-core PP cost less
but I reckon that one supply trafo and two output OPT's will be half your budget, more or less
but you could still order directly from Edcor, and save a bit
you probably wont find any at cheaper price
probably around 50-60USD for a good PP OPT
I would also be concerned about tube prices, as they will cost money in the future too
as fore the box, its probably easy to find a cheap steel box in your neighbourhood
or find something used, maybe a scrapped CD player or PC

Just thought you might like to know.... I've taken the plunge case wise and ordered a pair of 10mm front panel Galaxie enclosures from Modushop.biz
On the hunt for trannies now 🙂
Cans for transformer potting/shielding
Anyone know of a UK supplier for transformer cans?
Can't seem to find any anywhere.
Thanks in advance.

Digikey.uk sells Hammond
Relatively expencive, but up to 30watt PP seems fair
more power, more money

1620HM-ND or 1650FHM-ND
but it is best you check yourself
go to index, transformers/audio, Hammond/push-pull audiophile..., apply filters

Thanks again, reckon the 25watt is what i'm after.

Right.
Transformers ordered. Gonna wait on tubes till i've researched pro's and cons of different variants a bit more.
Now for the aesthetics..... I'm still trying to find a source for chassis mount transformer cans big enough to house the ones i'm using. As yet, i have had no success. Bit worried about trying to make my own.
Any ideas people?
Cheers.

Could I use a cake tin to cover both transformers at once?
I know it sounds mad but I think it could be enameled and look quite nice!
The missus refuses to have even shrouded transformers in the room! I haven't explained 'exactly' how much they cost. Maybe she'll change her mind!🙄🙄
So, Cake tin or does anyone know where I can lay my hands on some 100x100x100mm drawn aluminium cubes in the UK?
Cheers chaps.

hmm, you have 3 trafos, OPT's and supply
with a big stereo build they are usually in line at back panel
you should be able to find some thin perforated alu sheet
I say thin because its easier to bend, and cheaper
use a piece of wood at both ends
bend the perforated metal sheet over those ends
a bit of handywork, but not too difficult

I thought the primary recommended for this amp is 5k on the OPTs, 8k will work but you will be limiting performance a bit I think. Have you already ordered the OPTs? If not and you are shipping from the USA already, I would strongly consider going with Edcor. Better price point and quality IMHO. They are what I used for this amp and I couldn't be more pleased with them. I am pretty sure they were 5k though. It has been a while.
There is a guy in the states selling chassis on eBay for 95.00, excellent quality and perfect size for this build. I had him send me a couple without the wooden ends and built my own, I think he dropped the price to 60.00 or 65.00 usd without the wood end plates, they were simple to replicate and I saved about 30%. If you are interested I will try to find the ad on bay for you, it was a little tricky to find when I looked for it again but, it is still there last I checked.
Sincerely,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
Thanks very much for your post.
Regarding Transformers, These are already ordered. 🙁 Will the performance really be hampered significantly? Hopefully not too bad.
Re - Enclosures: I have ordered 10mm thick aluminium front panel variant Galaxy chassis from Modushop. They were not a bad price at £75 delivered for the 2 units, so i am happy there.
If there is a major issue with the Output trafos I might put them up for sale to help finance some 5k ones.
Regards,
Peter.

Hi Tinitus,
I will look into this. Would prefer deep drawn cans but may have to turn my hand to sheet metal fabrication😀
Thanks for the info though.🙂
Guy's (and Gal's)
I have managed to source all components minus trafoes, tubes and chassis from RS Components.
Built up an excel sheet for the part numbers.
All ordered. Not long now till the build begins!😀
