So bitumen pads inside is not a good idea?

And yes, i was supposed to build in 18mm BB but the cost and effort wasen't worth it. I might do it next summer though. Because i have seen more beautiful speakers than mine... 😉

Is it difficult to cover it with fiberglass cloth? Is it something you can do at home or do you have to make it a specialist's store?
I have actually planned on atleast increasing the thickness of the baffle. Surface-mounted drivers don't look that good really and if i flush-mount them i only have 6mm of particle board left. I've been thinking of either adding a 12mm piece inside the box (need to fix the brace in that case, and it would decrease the box volume) or placing a sheet on the outside. But placing it on the outside might cause some esthetical problems and block the vents. The sides are sturdy enough i think, but the top, bottom, baffle and back could need some more material thickness. It does make quite some sound if knocking on any of the places i mentioned above.

By the way, i ordered the Reckhorn S-1 and CSS Ultratouch on... Tuesday i think it was. Hopefully i will get them within the next two weeks.

Edit: By the way, i still need a design for my subs. 50l vented tuned to 25hz and has to be atleast 70cm tall.

And another thing. They are not that perfect for pushing them to the limits playing Meshuggah at really loud volumes. But they still outperform any speaker in this price class at probably everything.

that certainly depends on who you talk to / the designer's thoughts on enclosure damping / bracing etc.

of course if you're still entertaining speaker projects by the time next summer comes around, you may well have a completely other enclosure / driver(s) in mind - but please try to budget for decent plywood

the cloth is only part of it - very messy work, and noxious chemicals are involved in the resins, but it can certainly be DIYed

On balance, it'll probably be easier to add the material to the exterior of the box. Getting the size/location for the driver cut-out to result in a flush rebate will be the trickiest part - at the very least I'd suggest cutting the front piece oversized and trim the overhang later. Openings to vent can be beveled or radiused with saw or router.

at the end of the day, these are still only a 70mm driver - even though attainable SPL and LF extension will definitely improve with the addition of separately powered woofer(s) and high pass filtering to the CHRs, they will eventually "hit the wall"

Well, i really enjoy speaker projects. I just need a design for my subs to get started on a new project 😉
I think a friend of mine might cover his car-subwoofer enclosure with fiberglass cloth this winter. Maybe i could talk some with him about it?

And the thing with blocking the vents is that the 45degrees bevel will go into the driver, so to say. There's just around 6-7mm on the sides of the driver until the start of the bevel as it is right now.

And btw, it's the EL70 i got and not the CHR-70. But for a 4" fullrange driver i am really impressed about the SPL and LF extension!

plan on budgeting a few beers / his favorite beverages

sorry, I lost track of the driver and enclosure you finally settled on - maybe you could post or link me to photo?

Haha, this friend is 16. But i'm sure he wouldn't mind a beer or two 😉

Temporary setup:
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Was just an idea with the bitumen. Had some good results in normal sealed and bassreflex but as this is not one of those..

Those dont look bad from that picture. Some filler, sanding, paint and time and it can be better looking than bought from a store.

I don't know if it's visible in the pictures but the top piece is too large at the moment. I'm not sure how i would do if painting. I still want to flush mount the drivers somehow before doing anything else with the speakers.

Just got the package from Canada. A bit faster than i had expected 😉
So far only hooked up the S-1 filter and realised it was impossible to tune it in myself. I will let my dad assist me in that, phase is probably completely wrong and i can get all the other stuff better aswell.

First thing i noticed is that i can play MUCH louder with rock-music and such. I will never be able to play as loud as i did with my old huge speakers but there is a quite huge difference in difference and number of drivers...

I will probably fix the dampening this weekend, i expect it to get much better when i get it done.

Hi again!

I've been out in the "workshop" for a while today but with not much profit. The CSS Ultratouch was not the easiest thing to cut into pieces. And i didn't have anything to glue the pieces with so i used short screws with a big head to make the two big side-pieces to stick to the wall. I realised it would be impossible to screw all pieces to place since that cabinet is small as **** and i've had two pieces of metal (probably from the screw) in my poor thumb already...
Will see if i can get some glue tomorrow. Now one of the speakers is 50% done. Right now i hear no real difference in the sound between the old dampening and the new halfly finished one.

I've talked some with 41hz and they recommended AMP6-Basic. He said that could assemble it for me with bananaplugs and RCA to a small cost.

But i wonder... will that amp be strong enough? I know that 20w is maximum continuous power for the EL70 but i guess they can take more peak.
And the AMP6-basic delivers 2x25w 4 ohm with 10%(!) THD.

example of damping:
turn the enclosure upside down, place the top part inside snuggly, add the sides and back snuggly and then turn it up 🙂 the sides and back will now support the top and then place the bottom part and your done 🙂 the lower will now support the sides and back

Ah, it worked a little better with scissors 😉

I've finished the dampening now, a lot of work! The second speaker was finished around five times faster than the first 😉 Glued the pieces with a hot glue gun without any major problems.Damped all panels except for the brace.

Listening to them right now i and i notice no real difference at the moment with rock music. Going to try some acoustic tomorrow.

Btw, it's nice having the Reckhorn S-1. Now you can play any song almost as loud as you want without having to go and check the excursion so it wont bottom out 😀
