so Niklas, the journey was worth the cost?
OK, so I knew the answer to that one already
congrats - BTW how'd the exam go? - and what does dad think about the speakers?

Well worth the cost 🙂
Not the best looking speakers, but for the price - unbeatable!
The exam was okay. Got 47.5 out of 57. Could've been better but i didn't read so much for it.

someone was pre-occupied? (of course a DIYer would say - "at least I had my priorities right 😀 ")
'round here 83% would be considered an acceptable pass
By the way... I think my dad thinks they sound great, but he can't admit it 🙂
if he taps his toes he already did
I've always thought that my headphones sounds very good. But if i listen to the speakers for a while and then put on my headphones everything sounds much less detailed, much more "false" than the speakers.
It's incredible what you can do with this little money. I say it again, i'm chocked!

What do you think about a Class T amp for these little ones?
I really really like Tripath amps. How much power do these speakers realistically need, and what impedance do they have? I can try to recommend something good, and still cheap.

They can handle up to 20w, but as i will XO them at ~80Hz there wont be much bass. They're 4ohm.
OK! Convenient ... Sounds like a good match for just about any simple Tripath amp.
I really like the 41Hz.com amp kits. The Amp6-BASIC would be a good fit here, it's even available preassembled: 41Hz Audio:AMP6-BASIC Assembled
Just add a box and a 12 to 15V power brick, and you're runnig. These amps are REALLY good!

From where do i order that?
Do i get volume control, input things and speaker terminals and such?
From where do i order that, Europe?
12v to 15v? Is it battery powered or is it possible to connect it to a wall outlet?

41Hz is actually in Sweden! 🙂
Edit – You get the "guts" of the amp, plus some very basic connectors. To put it in a nice case, you need to add some things afterwards.
You can get a volume pot from 41Hz, maybe some terminals and such – don't know. You can get the rest for sure at http://elfa.se ... maybe for less money someplace else though.
You can power it with a battery, or wall-power adaptor. Anything, as long as it's between 12 and 15 Volts DC, and about 35-50 or more Watts.

Very basic connectors?
Didn't find any volume pot or terminals and such at 41Hz.
And a wallwart will cost me some money aswell, for a good one. I'd prefer having it built-in if possible.
Here's an Alps pot at 41Hz: 41Hz Audio:ALPS pot dual 50K Log PCB – pretty cheap, pretty good.
Yeah, looks like you would have to buy some mounting hardware somewhere else. But ... A) You can use almost any 12V power brick - these amps are not sensitive to the power supply quality ... and B) You really, really cannot get a better amp for the money 🙂 Promise! They do the same "magic" as I can tell your speakers do.

Maybe Kjell&Company has some stuff. If not i have to buy from elfa and their not so awesome shipping costs...
What about a Marantz PM4001? I've been offered to buy one for $230. I can't find any reviews of it.

I've never heard anything bad about Marantz. AFAIK they make reliable and fine sounding high-middle-end consumer gear. Can't comment on the price, but it looks reasonable. It's going to be a good match for the speakers, it looks like.
(The Amp6 is going to sound better though! That I can promise 🙂 .. But it's more work to get it off the ground ...)
Some threadnaught 🙂 Seems like you have been in one big rollercoaster for the past 6months with speakerbuilding desicions. To be honest, been there, done that 😀 Sometimes the simplest and easyest is the best.
To the amp wondering, something wrong with the HK? Or just wondering what another amp could do with those speakers? Im currently building the amp6 from 41hz and possibly you could get the rest for the amp ordered from biltema, clas ohlson and/or elfa. For my amp im thinking of using a universal laptop recharger. Aprox cost for the parts, without the amp and vol pot, 60€ prob close.
One thing i noticed about your speakerbox is that its made from particle board. One idea would be to add some bitumen pads inside the box on the back and sides. Could have some gain in sound as it makes the box a bit sturdy. If you tap the box with your knuckles, does it make a lil echo? You get bitumen from biltema or almost any place that sells spareparts for cars and/or aftermarket parts. It costs about 10€ for a 0,5m2 piece but it isnt too much fun working with it. Need a heat gun to work with it and leaves nasty stains.

I don't even want to guess on the effect of bituminous pads on particle board.
Niklas' original intent was to build these out of 18mm BB, and the 12mm particle board was simply for practise. After listening he figured that it was good enuff... i think that 18mm BB would probably be another revelation for him 🙂
Bituminous damping on a full on plywood build would take the box in the wrong direction.
Given the concepts behind the box design, he would be better off sheathing the current box with another layer of material (including the possibility of fiberglass cloth) if not up to just starting over.
