Russian PIO caps. Should I use them?

Capacitor orientation

Is there any standard convention on orientation for most of the Russian caps? I notice that the k40y-9's I have actually seem to have a little arrow, which points in the same direction as the text.

I know that one should expect a break-in period for these caps, especially the teflons. Should one expect that the best-sounding orientation at first listening will be the best sounding after break-in? If one were to reverse a cap after break-in, would one need to go through the whole break-in process again? (I've definitely heard the effects of break-in, but don't have any clue as to what's going on during the process.)

Any ideas on the best orientation, if any, of the MBG series?

And does anyone have an opinion as to which of the large PIO caps sound best?

Thanks, Jim (new member)

BTW, I've tried some FT-3's (.22uf, 600V) to bypass a pair of 40 uf ASC's in an ultrapath amp, and the effect was pretty magical. With almost no break-in (and I'd be curious about the relative break-in time needed for the FT-3 vs the V-cap) everything became sweeter, more lucid, more extended. The only downside, if it is one, is a very subtle gloss, which may disappear with break-in.

Re:

Guys,
Anyone have any idea how good (or bad) these specific caps are in the great scheme of things?

Also, good/bad for leakage?

Many thanks!

As you see from the picture, I use these caps in midrange high pass section of my Mezzo Utopia speakers.
I made a combo from 47uf Fast Power caps + 1.5uf K75-10 PIOs and this is most musical, smooth an unfatiguing sounding combo I've tried. K75-10 PIOs are made like (russian) ;)tank and measure according to specs. Regarding price/performance ratio these caps are one of the very best out there.

75-10 are just general purpose/motor run capacitors.
Paper/metallised mylar.
OK for power supply filters... or motor run
Something hermetically sealed in metal does not
automatically imply "ultra" quality. Old lytics for instance.
In that particular case, casing simply keeps paper dry.
For interstage coupling K77-1 should be much better (polycarbonate).

P.S.Excerpt from datasheet:
"... to be used in DC, AC and pulse circuits at frequency of 50Hz..."

different people, different tastes - i yet have to hear a russian PIO cap deserving to be on a signal path where absolutely transparency and invisibility is a must. they are good for power supplies, that's all - if implemented on a signal path, they will act as a rather obvious equalizer. some circuits will like that, though.

Hi,
you can use Ex-Soviet PIO caps from 1950, 60 etc without problem. I used MKV caps made in 1939 and sound was unbelievable good. The different story with Elythic caps - let pass it. The best possible and available PIO caps are KBG, MBGO, K75, K40, K42 - the other problem is size.

PIO lifespan

Hi,

I was wondering what is the lifespan of PIO capacitors (specifically the Russian K40y-9). Are they similar to film capacitors that live forever or are they more like electrolytics that start to deteriorate after 10-15 years?

I am looking at replacing some of the caps in my Motif amplifier with K40y-9.

Still.
Adding Blutack instead foam between and under the caps, better kills microresonances, also, combining Jantzen Superior Z MKP with PIO caps is "the marriage made in heaven" for the most of the russian PIOs.

In my case-K42+Superior Z in whole system wherever MKPs are necessary, Superior Z are similar sounding in a way as PIOs, as Troelsgravesen said, but combined, no melowness of russian PIO, only musicality, refinement and fantastic depth of stage and almost true bodies of instruments, provided by Superior Z spiced with russian PIO magic ability to enlighten presence of musicians and their musical message.

I use K42Y-2 capacitors in my Sweet Peach, bypassed where possible by Silver Mica and where not possible (due to voltages being too high) by polypropylene.

The PIO quality is top notch, the sound is excellent and I think mixing brands can only help. I'm a fan of Russian mil-spec components ;)
