Clean ground but at the expense of how much jitter? An optic isolator is a much better solution.

There is no reason to worry 16/44 compatibility but USB1.1 ports are to be avoided. For reasons i don't understand they sound much worse.

But if the master clock is in the Hiface, I don't see how wireless USB would add jitter, please explain. And correct me if I'm wrong but I haven't seen an optic isolator that can transmit 480Mbs. Also I know there was a lot of experiementation with optic isolators on DAC ground plans to isolate the digital from analog section a few years ago, results were poor.
 
Will a hi-speed device (Hiface) work through a full-speed device (Adum)? Edit: I just saw that you were referring to a wireless USB - hmmm! Try it & see & let us know the results 🙂

BTW, the problem with the sharp edge sound to I2S was not the ground!

no digital cable for HiFace

Hi All, I'm ordering a HiFace today, started thinking about cables. Has anyone tried using a male RCA to male RCA adapter (connecting the HiFace direct into the back of the DAC)? My PC is about 6ft away from the audio equipment, so I thought about using a 6ft USB, and go straight in with the SPDIF. The "best cable is no cable" theory. -Mike

I have modified USB extension cables to be able to input 5V power at the Hiface end. I've used various 5V supplies, 5V wallwart, 4*1.2V battery pack & they confer a sonic improvement on the Hiface (not as much as my 3.3V mods 🙂)

Did you already compare them to batteries?

I got the new version TeddyRegs. Did you have a chance
to test those also?

I haven't had a chance to compare the Paul Hynes shunt regs to the batteries yet.

I'd like to hear the Teddy regs - what's the difference between the old & new versions?

I've heard that the PFM Flea reg sounds great - have you heard it?

I didn't read up on the difference of the two versions.
I designed my own bords of the old version two
years ago and they made a siginficant difference.
The new versions are still layinng around here untuched.
This time I just purchased the boards as they are cheap.
I like TeddyRegs for their simpleness and easy to obtain
componets.

I never heard of the PFM Fea regs.
So many options so little time.

I've just had a report back from someone who bought a battery from me to test it against highly regarded commercially available & freely available regs & the battery is noticeably better.

He's running these regs on the AVCC of a Sabre DAC (we all know these are sensitive to PS quality). They are operated form a heavily filtered supply which is fed from a 1KVA isolation transformer - so a serious PS.

He said the change to battery was clearly better & noticeable within seconds but also became more obvious with extended listening.

I got mine two weeks ago. It should be stated again how good this little thing "sounds", even in stock form. Compared to a classic squeezebox that i used as a transport only, the difference is quite stunning...
I know i will want to mod it at some stage, but for now, i'm just enjoying my Flac's over and over again on an old mac mini G4 , 1.42 GHz. Works perfectly. Dac is a modded Zhaolu 2.5 with zapfilter.

Also I want to know if it is a good idea to remove the isolation transformer, because I use one from Lundahl ll1572 inside my buffalo dac.

I think the only difference from the original hiface photos is that small 22.5792 clock is no longer a MEC clock.

You are talking about removing the SPDIF transformer in the HiFACE - is the LL1517 being used for this in the Buffalo?

Pharod, Can't be done without breaking the case - it's glued along a seam all the way around the case.

I rebox my modified Hiface inside a bigger box with batteries, switch, led, charger socket.

I think he's talking about balanced charging where each batteries' charge has to be sensed by the charger so as not to overcharge any particular battery. I charge my two batteries in parallel - no schematic.

Are you going in there to DIY the mod?
 
Not sure if I'm going to diy my mod just yet. I wanted to play with other things in the system with those batteries and when I get it settled I thought the battery mod on the HiFace would be more telling.

My friend will probably get the whole thing from you. Actually maybe two friends who don't know or trust their solder skills.

Since both my other applications would call for two batteries in series per application - filament 2 packs of two. Dac three packs of two. Just putting a charger on them with them paralleled? I guess my brain isn't working this morning. I just put in a switch to take them out of the circuit and place them in parallel?
