Salvaged console tube reciever

Oh and I read the round paper that was left with the recod player:

it says "Stereo equipped "Garrard Autoslim" automatic record changer

What does that mean? It is any good? I believe the needle is a new sapphire tipped one.
I saw a discarded package in the cabonet before I did my thing to it.

What shale I do with it? It is really clean. All I need to do is make a VERY simple four wall box for it to sit on and bolt to with its shock absorbing springs, and wire up 115v ac, then feed the rca plugs out the back of the diy box to the amplifier.

It is good or junk?

In reverse order" Your turntable is junk, slick.

Toss it in the recycle bin.

It is no good.

Autoslim means: "you oughta toss me now, slim"

Please, for the love of all things vinyl, throw the bum out. Buy at least a nice old AR table, then equip it with a nice cartridge from Needle Doctor or another vendor. Read up on setting the various parameters. They are important to get right.

Here is a nice example. It will fit right in with the vintage console equipment, in terms of looks. The problem may be that the phono preamp may not have sufficient gain for a magnetic cartridge. But that can readily be addressed and is worthwhile.

Thanks, now I will let the turntable go. I just wanted to be sure.
I had a nice vintage brand name record player when I was 15 years old. That was in 2000, ten years ago. My dad had a milk crate full of 70’s and 80’s albums which he gave to me.

I listened to them. When I moved out and away, I was disappointed to learn that he THREW AWAY both the record player and the crate of vinyl albums! Along with my RCA Victor tube radio and a few other goodies which I got cheap ten years ago, but are hella expensive and hard to find today where I live.

sucks eh.

When I left home my Mum threw out my A0-sized advertising poster for The Cars Candy-o by Vargas.

Whack priorities I say.

He will also need a phono preamp. The TT input on this unit is essentially an AUX input.

I'd say a not particularly sensitive "line" level I/P at that. Yes, the cart. mounted in the "engraver" TT is piezoelectric. I expect that it's crystal, not ceramic, to get a signal level measured in Volts. Ceramic carts. yield a signal level in tenths of a Volt.

All i know Eli, it that i've plugged CD players directly into the same input on similar amps & it was about right.

Criminal!

Now you HAD to post that Vargas album cover....just as AKUS and I were settling in for an enjoyable evening. So I HAD to get out the blasted album, get it to the VPI, get out the AIVS fluids, spend insane time cleaning the filthy thing, and THEN finally listen.

Half way through, I'm thinking digital is so much easier, why bother? Then I put on the album and Ah, yes. No substitute!!

Lets Go, CivicProtection!

So, you do have a MPX decoder. 😉 It's the 2 tubes near the exposed coil on the amp chassis.

Please scan and upload the schematics.

The paper I have has some "schematic" on it. It is mostly a graphic telling me where on the chassis all the tubes and jacks and stuff go.

The wiring part is something for stereo output.

I didn't think I left any papers behind so I went back to check.

I returned to the thrift store yesturday, and I politley asked a staff lady there if they still had the cabinet I had left, and she treated me rudely.

"welll!you should've taken the whole thing then, it is gone! It is compacted *holds up fingers for inpection* THIIIS thin".

People are unfriendly, stuckup, snappy, gruff jerks in town.

Thanks aarkvarkash10,

The point, for CivicProtection, is don't worry so much about looks. Sure, your wife/significant other will banish you to the cellar, but you will learn to love your man cave as I love mine. So what if the "box" you put your new found console components in, is made of cardboard? It's a start! Enjoy!

On the other hand, vinyl, done right, is a major pain in the a$$ and expensive. That said, I wouldn't have it any other way and the listening is the reward.

CivicProtection, once you get the basic amp/tuner/speakers up and running, come back and ask about phono preamps. Oh boy are you in for a treat. So many options and opinions.

Now aardvarkash10, get to work on that SL1200. A fine deck, now let's see it in its man cave! Post pics, we love it!

CivicProtection (Officer?),

Geez, some people punish you for being polite, huh?

No schematic, no problem. Learning experience. Download Duncan Amps' TDSL and use it to identify the pin out of each of your tubes. Then turn over the amp and draw a schematic based on where you find the wires, resistors, transformers and caps connected to the various tube sockets. It may be frustrating, but point-to-point wiring is easy to trace. You will really learn a lot.

If you decide to rewire the amp, and tubes, etc., this will be invaluable information. It would help to have a magnifying glass and extra work light.

Good luck.

Cardboard? I bought some 1/2" spruce plywood, and I am going to use that for the case. I took a piece of cardboard and I cut it out and I was mocking it up to see how the new wooden front panel would look. It might have snuck into the pic? I am moving in the next four months, and I want to save something special.

Now.....what is more special then a vintage 1964 tube stereo reciever you bought and salvaged and cleaned up. Then installed in a handmade wooden box your best friend helped you to cut and assemble?

Civic,

I didn't mean to say that YOUR project was going to be in cardboard. Sorry. I meant that when doing an electronics project in general, the appearance doesn't matter as much as the sound. If you build on a crappy piece of unfinished plywood, as my phono preamp is on now, or if you build in a beautiful Bubinga wood cabinet as a friend just built his preamp in, enjoy it sonically. Yes, I know that different materials have different sounds, but hey, enjoy. For now, the circuit details matter most. Eli and the others have some great power amp circuit suggestions.

And by all means please post progress pictures.

The receiver has an annoying dual volume/balance knob.
the balance is adjusted with a plastic "pointer" behind the silver knob.
It is a little awkward. But normally that would be ok, but if I want to use the plywood I bought, then I have to get creative.

See, the original front was sheet aluminum. Long story short; I am ditching the aluminum front. The ½” plywood is much thicker then the aluminum.
So the balance pointer knob will be a problem. So what I think I will do is go in, measure the resistance of the knob 0-X ohm and buy a new pot. Disconnect the balance pot making it defunct. Then reroute the wires to the new balance pot which I will reposition elsewhere.

So after, the balance/volume will be just volume, and look original. The balance will be located somewhere else.

I took the photo of the cardboard front and used mspaint to add a knob to the top corner. What do you think?

Sweet!😎

You cut a lot straighter than I do.

See, if it was me, I'd be done. Time for a beer and some listening.:note:

LOL.

If you are replacing the balance and volume pots, this could be a good time to upgrade to something like an Alps or Noble pot, if those are still available.
