Playstation as CD-player

To Rokytheman

How's the sound after you replace the linear powersupply?

Hmm hard to tell because I have struggled alot just to make it want to play - I have almost no electronic skills but I will not give up so I have not listened very much.

If I schould describe the sound with one word I would say it is Analog BUT

1) The bass is still a bit muddy
2) It is like there is a kind of curtain in front of my speakers.

Bypassing some of the caps in the signalpath may get rid of the "bad sound" - I have tried step 4 on Mick Feuerbacher Audio Projects but it made the sound go crasy - I wonder if it is problem with DC. I have done exactly as told on the site.

Using a decent cable compared to a standardcable (RCA) will hopefully increase the sound quality.

Hi all,

I've been following this thread for some time, and want to build Mick's PSU, though I would like to make a small PCB for looks.

Wonder if anyone care to comment on my proposed layout, it's just the 1st reg. part (ie the 7.6v line).

It's done with some parts I have in hand, hence the component size

thank you in advance

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Well, I'm only an amateur, thats why I would like some opinions on this, and yes I've created all of the boards, that is two boards for the 7.6 and 8.3v line and one board for the second regulation part (small one)

As for a group buy, I think it is possible, but would like to know Mick's opinion first, it's his design after all :D

Hello Everyone, this is my first post at this great site. I found it while researching using a PS 1 as a CD player. I see it has been a very popular discussion. It will take me some time to read throuh all the posts so I thought I would start with a general question while i read.

Is the scph-1001 the only model available in the USA that is worth of using? I have checked e-bay and find all different model #s. Should I only look for a 1001?

Thanks for any help.

Laser Settings

Hi,
I am converting a batch of PlayStations as in the dogbreath article.
I am finding that for reasonable tracking I am having to set the three voltages to values quite different from those given in dogbreath. I expect this is due to the age of the various machines.
Does any one have information on the ranges of voltages which are acceptablefor a PlayStation 1 laser and any recommendations about these?
Thanks for the help

George

Hi George,

I think Micks values were great for his specific drive. I don't think it's a common value. You have to try different voltages, or better, use the drive from the PS one like I did. No problems anymore!

Hoping to post some pictures of my "recased" PS1 next week!

Hi karlton

You have a "wrong" model,check this site : SCPH-1002 :: playfidelity

There are significant differences in the sound between different models,if you like the sound of the one you have now it's ok.

Long time ago I had nothing but possibly scph-9002?,at the time I didn't play much music though and to be honest it didn't sound good at all.It was then replaced with the cheapest Sony cd player at the time, and the improvement was huge.

Well, the 1001/2 and the 5000 models share the same DAC, so modding the output stage will have the same results.

Using another newer transport will require some modding also to fit!

To Tolu,

I could try to design one to fit on the PS case, but keep in mind that Mick strongly suggested that it should be outside!

Regarding the grounds again, do you think I can use a ground plane for all of the circuit, or at least for the rectifiers part (msr860) I shouldn't use the same, or abandon completely the idea and return to separate signals?

spch 1001 for US

I just found a 9001 my boys had long forgotten about. Luckily they had a converter cord that went to RCA. I must say I am very impressed with it. Never would have thought I would be using a PS 1 as a CD player. Anybody else using a 9001?

You can check it @ any used games stores,Craigslist. I bought mine on a garage sales last summer.you need to buy a remote control too, I got mine on a pawnshop near ur place.
