i also got USBDAC from you. it's very good sound and convenient to play WAV or APE by Foobar2000.

Give the DAC a good 100 hours to fully open up. The blackgates continue to get better over 300 hrs. I leave mine on all the time and it is excellent.
Then drop Foobar and pair CPLAY & CMP to this DAC and you will be blown away. Very short USB also good.

thank you walter.
i will try.
Peter, it has been a couple of months and was wondering if you have anything to report on the "more serious project"
'All in all, I'm very content with that unit and I use it in my workshop for music, internet and video. I have another, more serious project coming up soon.'

would you give your recommends for a BG (N and STD) substitutions
are nichicons (too many types) good, rubycons or pana FM/FC

Hi Samoloko,
I've never heard of real substitutes for Black Gates when it comes to electrolytic caps in coupling / decoupling applications. Further more, sound of caps really is a matter of personal taste. I would go for some nice film caps, MKP's or KP's.
If size matters, I would recommend to outsource the caps from the pcb completely. Then you have the possibility to try every cap you want.
I did the same in a recent project when I decided to use some russian military pio's, bypassed with a small film cap of same value. Very nice result, and much better than some ordinary electrolytics...

If not BGs then Panasonic FC; some people also like BC Components caps, but I never tried them.
thx for very kind reply Martin
It has to be a electrolitic cap which has closer to BG N sound
I don't have much practice thats why I ask

Ok, then perhaps this test might show you some alternatives:

There is also something said about some Panasonics and Nichicons.
Happy reading ;-)

have you think what you would use for a replacement of BGs
after all they are not In production
why do you like pana FC more than FM
also what you think about nichicon and rubycon for couple / decouple

I expressed my views on capacitors here: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=574431#post574431

I've been using Panasonic FC for many years and don't plan replacing them with anything else. BGs were fine, but only for limited production of certain amp models. I still keep substantial stock of Black Gates for future needs (to be used in actual products only and not sold for parts).
And why would I like FM if FC work fine for me? 😉
The only other caps I would be interested to try out are already mentioned BC Components (used originally in Gaincard)

Hi Peter,
following the building of my amp based on your LM3875 kit I am thinking of connecting remotely my Mac to the amp building your NOS dac. Is it posible and how to connect the dac to an Apple Airport Express WI-Fi?
I read that Airport Express has a 3.5mm jack digital out (S/PDIF).
Regards
Renato

Sorry I get confused. Somewhere else I read that Airport Express has a toslink digital output not S/PSDIF. But the question is always the same: is it possible to connect it to the DAC?

Hi Renato,
This should work:

Good luck, I had a Monica dac and never could get it to work with toslink for my airport express. My future plans are to go directly from the mac to a usb dac.

Hi,,
thank you for the answers. There is also the possibility suggested in post #2629, that is more or less to build a diy airport express box connected via usb to the dac.
I think it is some more effort and expensive than airport, but with increased flexibility.
I got the job for next September

HI peter you have same good experience with hammond 229 series in your dac ,I want upgrade the toroid on phono and driver psu , the 24VA and 48A have 15% regulation , as I need 50ma and 100ma you can estimate the Vout and the coils is matched ?
thanks for your time

A phono stage circuit will be available soon. I've been experimenting with it since last winter and finally came out with a version that practically competes with anything out there. A first prptotype have been already presented here: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=145383 however the board pictured below is much more practical and convenient. The phonostage circuit is coupled with a shunt reglator (which is double the size the phonostage itself) in a package similar to previously offered NOS DAC design. Both sections can be separated and used on its own.
The boards go into production next week and should be available in 3 weeks or so, after I'm back from my European vacation 😉
