Salas DCG-3 Preamplifier and DCSTB Power Supply

Posted 10th April 2016 at 12:26 PM by Tea-Bag
Updated 29th December 2016 at 08:37 PM by Tea-Bag

This blog is concerning ordering, parts, assembly and some brief sound review of the two new circuits designed by Salas.

The DCG-3 is a new preamplifier design. It offers 10-15db of gain, and can use several different types of input JFETs.
Here is the preliminary values in the schematic.

Here is the prototype board

Here is the Actual Production layout

The DCSTB is Salas first offering of a series regulated supply. It is very easy to assemble and includes two board assemblies off one power supply. This is a somewhat 'greener' approach and requires less waste current than say it's SSLV1.1 or BIB board equivelant....

F6 Clone Convertible PCB blog

Posted 27th January 2013 at 01:48 PM by Tea-Bag
Updated 29th June 2013 at 07:30 PM by Tea-Bag

Here is the F6 board rendered by CRT and some help from others.

Click the image to open in full size.

It's convertible premise is to be able to swap out transformers using daugter cardsand be able to swap out variations on the schematics Nelson Pass presented at the 2012 Burning Amp Festival.
Additionally, places for two pairs of 2SK/2SJ are here to allow GR's to be used to allow for higher than 8ma IDSS without degeneration on the front end. If you have 8ma IDSS BL grade for use here, than your all set.
You can use standard power resistors or 5MM thin film type.

Here are some of the daughter cards that mount to the main board. They are available for Jensen, Cinemag and Onetics Quadfilar transformers.
These are mounted with 2 2x10 @ 2.54 mm pins. Note the PC PINs of...

Dual Rail Power Supply for Power Amplifier

Posted 10th October 2012 at 05:55 PM by Tea-Bag
Updated 7th March 2016 at 01:08 AM by Tea-Bag (updating recommended BOM materials)

Here are some pictures of the Power Supply that CRT and myself designed for use with the F5T and F6Convertible design. It is meant to be both compact, have adequate capacitance, and be able to use the recommended MUR3020W or similiar diodes. They are 2mm thick boards with 3OZ copper thickness.

(Updated boards take now 40mm wide caps and are larger measurements below and new pics)

Click the image to open in full size.

Boards measure 108mm wide x 192mm long. The diode boards are 35mm x 54mm each.

SouthSemi modified F2J Clone

Posted 7th January 2012 at 10:13 AM by Tea-Bag
Updated 21st November 2010 at 01:46 PM by Tea-Bag

This last weekend I replaced the IRFP240 in my F2 Clone with the R100 SouthSemi Power-JFET.

tubes-guy used psychic powers to control my mind and force me to do it.

The bias dropped off the bat. I re-biased and gave it an A-B listen to the standard channel. Seemed to be a bit 'cleaner' sounding the the default channel.

Nelson has recommended the following changes to the circuit, which I hope to implement soon. I will be re-wiring these on Peter Daniels boards.
The Peter Daniel boards are still available I believe.
https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/group...group-buy.html

Papa sayz...

The F2's that I have updated with the JFETs need the
following changes:

R6 = 47k (changed to 8.2K of FW Site)

C1 = 10 uF

Z1 removed

The potentiometer must be re-adjusted for minimum
distortion at 4.5 watts (symmetric clipping) and readjusted

Salas Board Minikits and Full Kits

Posted 16th September 2011 at 01:37 AM by Tea-Bag
Updated 30th April 2017 at 09:56 PM by Tea-Bag (expanding for all kits)

Here I am going to post some semi-commercial information regarding the minikits.

BIB or SSLV1.1
Make sure to read the full BiB build manual before ordering parts. The link is posted below.
BIB BUILD GUIDE REV2 BY SALAS

It is essential you understand and purchase for the correct voltage type and range you need for this kit and additional parts.

The purpose here is to report what parts are included in the minikit, and which are not.
This will assist builders in getting the correct parts that are not included in the minikits.

The minikits are made for one of the three sections of the PCB. The board itself can hold two positive and one negative rail type supply.

The kits are purely optional, and are sold to assist the buyer who may not be able to access the resources needed to gather the specific parts.

There are four kit types described below. IRF for voltage 5.5v...

Sony VFET version 2 AL Boards Build Blog

Posted 8th August 2010 at 09:29 PM by Tea-Bag
Updated 25th January 2016 at 04:35 PM by Tea-Bag

In the rare case you happen upon matched pairs of these transistors, and you like drilling, and you think my boards may be Ok, then go ahead and read this blog.

As a starting point, we settled on this schematic for the working amplifier. Some modifications were done from the original, and Botte made some changes to get a slower turn on rate for the boards.

Click the image to open in full size.

Note, R37,R38 and C1 and C2 have been changed. However, feel free to use original values.
Also note, for greater viability of use of JFETs beyond 8ma IDSS, source resistors can be used here ( I used 10R with 9ma pairs) - Otherwise jumper this location.

Q13 and Q14 are BC550c and BC560c. Originally Toshiba bipolars were used on my boards, but they were not stable in voltage and gain suffered on the boards. The boards have since had the pads altered to remove...

Salas HOT ROD DCB1

Posted 15th June 2010 at 03:56 PM by Tea-Bag
Updated 27th November 2014 at 04:51 PM by Tea-Bag (added BOM)

So I am going to write some details down about the DCB1 Hynotize Hot-Rod buffer. The current production board is black, 2 oz copper and 2mm thickness. (See below) The below blue pictures are prototype boards and are not representative of the product.

Here are some of the specifics to help understand ordering parts for it etc. This is not a detailed build guide, but there is a link to one below from another forum member.

They can handle 10mm pitch snap-in capacitors 25mm width capacitors.

There are positions for smaller MUR120 type diodes OR MUR820 style TO-220 style diodes. Not both!

The vRef LEDS can now be bypassed with a 25mm Film cap or a 100uf electrolytic. The film cap by consensus is best at .22uf.

M2C clone boards
Special thanks to Gerd, CRT and RusselC for assisting with this board concept and implementation.

The board is ~215mm x 50mm each channel
Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.
The board thickness is 2mm, the copper is 2oz copper double sided.

For C2, There are a number of options.
1. standard is to use a 10uf Elna Silimic 2 35v cap.
2. Use a cap to fit over the outlined block. This will require some headroom over the power resistor, but allow for a film cap.
3. As I display in one channel, use an ecap, and then use a 15mm film cap as a bypass for it.

Old Style DCB1 information

Posted 1st January 2010 at 02:53 PM by Tea-Bag
Updated 13th October 2010 at 12:48 AM by Tea-Bag (updated some more timely info)

The basics on the boards....
The hypnotize is a 1 input/1 output Shunt regulated Direct Coupled Pass like B1 buffer. It has a relay delayed startup to avoid DC problems for the amps. This board (and even Mez) can be used just as a shunt power supply, and their is a thread for this also.

The Mesmerize can use up to 6 muting relay inputs, and is a larger board. All others matters being equal.

Here are some relevant threads.
