I was listening to some female vocals today and it was not great.

:(

The one with the directly digital amp (probably TaCT) I talked about (ralf) says he uses a parametric EQ to let female voices sound less nervous. I had this problem before I mounted my side walls. Maybe you both have a hole in the middle with your plain baffle/subwoofer concepts.

I hope to get my hands on a T-Amp soon, and one of the 41Hz class D amps too. How do you apply the 100mA current limit?

I have never thought of changing volume by varying the voltage rails! I presume that you need highish voltage rails to start off with.

I'm not sure about the low cost version of the TACT chip. Some more research to do! ;)

I simply used the current limit of my lab power supply.
I looked at the schematic of the T-Amp and the only problem I can find is that the gate voltages would have to change, too, to get proper gate-emitter-voltages.

Good guess! I have just come back to the PC after adding an extra (temporary) 7 cm to the width of the baffles and the female voices are much better.

It seems that the Ciares don't fill out the bottom end to meet the subs as well as the 201's (on the same size baffle). I would have measured it by now but I am still waiting to replace a monitor so I can use my second PC for that purpose!

Anyway - PROGRESS! :)

No secret Dave! His name is Dave Smith.

Dave Smith of DK Loudspeakers is located in Essex and has a long history of working with loudspeakers. There's not much that Dave won't try and repair if he has the materials to do so. He has even repaired a unit from a 1920's radio! If you have a drive unit that needs repair, the best thing to do is give him a ring on 01708 447 344. Dave openly admits to having been completely left behind by computers so there's no email or web site but you can fax him on the same number.

Thanx, I may well have some drivers worth shipping to England to see if they can be repaired.

Does he have any tricks for "stiff surround syndrome"

Unfortunately is haven't spent as much time at DD as i would like... i find that, even with a CSS compliant browser, the dark text on the dark background is still VERY hard to read, so if i want to read something,, i have to print it out with ignore colors turned on....

It's good to see others tring the Ciare Ch250. I also have had Goodmans on OBs but mine were 301s. I did prefer the Ciares after a good break in and the extra magnet glued on. I also lifted the bass off the driver and added a zobel. Doing this to Lowther PM7a killed the music, but it was a definate improvement to the Ciares. I do not understand why this is.
The thing with these drivers is the cost to benifit ratio. These are cheap, and better than a hell of a lot of vintage drivers that I have tried on OBs over the years.
I will go back to the Lowthers, but this time on OB not horns.
I think that the amp driving the speaker is the most important thing with these types of driver. I had a Gainclone amp lent to me by a dealer. This amp made the speakers lifeless and hard sounding, but also thined out the sound.Maybe the output impeadence is too low on these amps.
Cheers.

Thanks for the reminder. I'm using an inverted LM3886 with snubberized PSU but I'm using 37 volts rails. I'll swap the PSU for the 27 volts one and see what happens. ;)

Yes, things are slightly better with the lower voltage supply! I had forgotten that the Ciares are 4 ohm! ;)

That's too much voltage for the LM3886 to be used with 4 ohm speakers:att'n:
Of course you know that, you just forgot.:D
I use +/- 30V, which is fine for 4 or 8 ohm speakers.
You should have good results with +/- 27V.

The only fly in the ointment Dave is that because he is so good, and a one-man operation, and is a perfectionist, there is a (long) waiting list. My 201's were away for nearly a year! :att'n:

Is that like an antidote to Viagra? :D Serouisly, it may be worth giving him a call and having a chat.

Please take another look! ;)

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Peter, are you referring to a Zobel across the speaker as opposed to the one on the output of the amplifier? If so, what exactly did you use?

I would say the sound is a little 'hard' not as 'full' as with the 201's but it's certainly not 'lifeless'. The term Gainclone covers quite a wide variation in specification! ;)
