Well, the Alpair is + or - 20db according to the measurements. Much different than the published chart. I'm not afraid of jagged frequency response curves but I was hoping to see a smoother response from what's considered a more modern driver. Never heard them but people love them... all the reason to trust your ears and not the measurements.

In the absence of any meaningful standard in sound reproduction anybody can like anything. It really is no meaningful assessment criterion.

Frequency response (on and off axis) is the number one criterion for a good sounding driver/speaker. This has been established by Harman research.

Furthermore I think it has been established that there's something fishy about the measurements Markaudio publishes. See this thread.

This is one of my favorite threads! I own the Fostex 168z, Tangband 1320 and 1808. These are all quality drivers I purchased based on money I had at the time, my desire to hear something new and musings on various threads. I've got other drivers but these seem to be my go to drivers at the moment. I am planning something with the Betsy's (which I never really did much with in the past - but am now itching to give them a good listen). I really enjoy seeing the frequency charts!

I hope to see the Betsy, Eminence 12LTA, venerable Radio Shack 1354, Jordans, Lowthers, etc. But I enjoy anything you decide to post.

Thank you for taking the time to create a great database of drivers both new and old. Much appreciated.

Does anyone know the story of why MA does not manufacture the drivers for Jordan?

Intrigue & betrayal... a good thing too, it freed Mark up to advance the concepts to give us the superb drivers he now makes.

Yes, it's probably safe to say that the few folks who think they know the whole story are close enough to both parties to avoid publishing to avoid accusations of bias. Things are often far more complex than they appear .

There was a close working association a few years back, now there's not - let's leave it at that?

Here is Markaudio Alpair 10P-A measurement page.

Thks for the Freq. Resp. curves.

There were many rave reviews by users of this driver, with reference to the Freq. Res. curves I can't really understand what the rave reviews are about. Maybe the users will tell me there are no correlations between sound reproduction to FR curves.

I bought a pair of Chinese made 5" FR with FR curves that look better than this, Also they do sound very good, and cost much less, $100 for a pair. BTW I have heard some FR including: Fostex 167E, Aucharm, etc and a few more, this pair beat all of them. Unfortunately I can't find them on sale any more.

Perhaps more pointing at how FR are made, and the inability to be used to completely judge a speaker's performance (despite Toole & Olive's unverified (& limited) study on measured FR impact)

Would you be able to post some pics?

I like to start of by using a Full range driver with "relatively" flat response and then play around with the response using DSP or components filters to get the sound you preferred.

I am using this 5in Chinese FR in my implementation of LXMini "Clone" my implementation in detail is very different from SL's but the configuration is the same, ie, Dipole from 750Hz upwards using this 5in FR and sealed woofer below 750Hz. My FR does not use a tube to attentuate the high freq. backwave. Currently using MiniDsp but my configuration I can get away by using x-over filter components at 750Hz, i.e. no need for DSP.

You can find images of the Chinese/Taiwan 5in from this thread,
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-range/256688-chinese-taiwan-5-dual-cone-speakers-2.html

see, Posts 20 and 30.

Note the FR curve is "relatively" flat accept for 2 places, I compensate for them in my DSP but I don't think they make any difference in the sound reproduction.

Hi,

Those interested in this Chinese 5in FR can found here, BTW I bought my pair from this chap, and I don't have any association with them. I took the risk of buying a pair just to try them out, well worth the money though.

I have pair of 4" same drivers, they sound to colored for my ears. my 12" AN cast frame play better at all, better detail in all ranges than 4in speaker I wonder how!
