Fixing or replacing a Papst GS 38.09 in a HK ST-8?

Attached are photos of either side of the circuit board that contains the motor windings and the hall sensor, and a close up of the hall sensor with a ruler for scale. Also attached is the data sheet for the hall sensor.

As far as how the tech diagnosed the issue, if I'm remembering correctly he said he wasn't getting a signal at the transistor(s) that the hall sensor feeds.

Thanks,
Clark

I was just corresponding with someone in Belguim who is selling some Revox capstan motors which I was considering buying to harvest the hall sensors. He pointed me at a seller in Poland who is selling these:

https://www.datasheets360.com/pdf/1267841659376091285

It looks like the right physical dimenstions, and has the right pin-out.

The seller is charging about 11USD for 10, but shipping to the US is 50USD. It would be worth it to me if it would be a good replacement.

Any thoughts?

First check the signal in running condition of the assembled motor, the sensor is used to sense movement of the magnetic poles.

May be a broken wire, and check the transistors themselves with a square wave input, some new DMM can give that sort of signal.

And if broken, and the specs match, ask the seller in Poland to pack securely in cushion foam in side a plastic box, and send by air mail, recorded delivery.
Won't be more than 10 US.

Hi All - I recently bought a Harman Karon ST-8. It worked for a little while, long enough for me to start to really like it, and then the motor - a Papst GS 38.09 - conked out. I asked a tech look at it, and he diagnosed it with a bad hall effect sensor, a photo of which is attached.

Apparently, dual output hall effect sensors with leads (as opposed to SMT) can not be found. Also, replacement motors also can't be found - I have an eBay search saved just in case one pops up, but so far, nothin'.

So, I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to make the current motor go, or barring that, any ideas on how to replace the motor all together? I don't mind it being a little kludgey.

Thanks!

i have a NOS Papst GS 38.09 I can sell you, if you're interested? PM me.

Cheers,
Mike Spence

Are they sleeve / bush bearings, or roller / ball bearings?

You do get sintered bearings (bushes) in many sizes, quite common in kitchen mixers, drills and so on.
Just search by size and shape.

They are generally push fit, and brittle, use some sort of screw jig or a press to remove and fit.
Soak the new ones in oil overnight, and grease before fitting.
Those are 25 cent items here, shame to scrap a good motor for that.
Changing time is minutes, provided you can open it, old motors can have stuck bolts and so on.
