Sorry for digging old post, but I need some advice.

Do You have any idea, how to make SR71 sound a bit "heavier"?
Everything was perfect, until I decided to change my amplifier, and now everything's much better except, it sounds a bit thin, especially in the mids.
Help please 😉

Hi 🙂

I am currently in the process of building a pair of these great speakers, and I have a couple questions.

As I am in France, I have to build the cabinet myself. To do so I have to round the dimensions (imperial to metric), how much precision do I need to have on the internal volume ?

What do you think of having the crossovers separated from the cabinet ? Is it an improvement ? Do I need to lower the internal volume if I do so ?

Thank you for your answers.

Shouldn't have any problems with volume if you use this:
Metric Conversion charts and calculators
You can mount xo in base or back, however, I don't think you'll hear any difference.

btw - I highly recommend rounding over front baffle with round-over-bit.

Being from the old school (slide rules) have always had a good sci calc at my disposal. Today I don't bother with programs on the computer todo, but either grab my phone or tablet that are always within an arms reach and use them for all the bloody PITA conversions. If you have an android device just use ConvertPad, it's free in the Play store.
When this country decides to convert, I can do most off the top of my head. 25.4mm = 1", 28.35g = 1oz, 1 mile = 1.6km etc 🙂

Better check double connections/phase.
What amp did you have and what are you using now?
I had a Roksan Kandy K2 and now I'm using a Xindak P-AM integrated amp.
I already checked the phase in the speaker connections. I'm pretty sure that the thin mids are the amp's fault, but I love the space/precision/dynamics/highs of this amp soooo much, that It's a keeper for me..
So I'm trying to find some other way, to fix this problem..

The conversion from inches to millimeters is not a problem but then I get dimensions with a precision down to a tenth of millimeter which is too precise to be built. Therefore I wondered how much rounding I could do.

Hi,
I think I made a mistake and I need your help.

I decided to make the sr71 with 22 mm mdf because I had some. I decided to keep internal dimensions so the baffle is 6 mm wider... Also the tweeter is 6 mm further from the top... I know I shouldn't have changed these particular dimensions but it's a newbie mistake ... And it's done. Hower, driver distance from each other is kept the same.

I need your help to know whether this is going to change a lot sound wise and if I need to start again from scratch ?

Thank you for your help.

Worry not about the twitter position from the top(a little bit off-axis impact, won't affect your listening)...the distance between twitter and woofer is much more critical.

baffle step is baffle diffraction, and is mostly for woofer, which should be taken care of during xover design...and the baffle width matters more in this case...

anyhow, I understand you want be perfect, you can sand or cut the top of the baffle a little bit to some angle...

Zaph did a wonderful design, and these SEAS drivers are awesomely good...I have built SR71 for myself, and I am building another one right now for my friend.

The build in progress..

performance

I've been looking to a DIY design for the price to performance ratio.

So far listening to stock speakers (warf. diamond 9.5) which compared to my headphones Alessandro MS1s sound awfully mudded and lacking detail.

I am looking for a speaker design that would perform at least as good as headphones such as Alessandro MS1s , or Grado 225i (colored I know and don't much like it)
I'd appreciate to hear thoughts in this regard and how the SR71 or any of Zaph's designs compare. ZD5's looked quite appealing to me for combining a compact design with very high performance.

I would prefer building floor standers (without using a sub), and use them in a small 4 x 6m. room at low sound levels, positioned about 3 meters from each other on the long wall side, for both music and movies and not having a particular sitting position. To be amped with a NAD C370 and sound coming from my humble laptop/dac combo.
