Windows is notoriously infamous for everything you two described above, but IME it is the funniest (I've not said the most reliable) OS out there.
You can really do everything, and you can really do it (almost) everything and if you like to bend your system according to your most immoderate preferences it is the one for you. IMO
Of course, you have to take some precautions, but you have to do this with each system in IT.
Not only "backup backup backup", but also what I've been doing for years that's just installing a program that restore Windows state at reboot and to store your data not on the same partition where Windows is.
This way you're going to have no trouble at all under Windows.

I've my way to create my personal Windows To Go running from USB stick (Windows 8 was simply perfect for that purpose for its ease in doing it), but actually I've my own Windows 7 partition working not only from my HDD inside the machine, but also on a USB stick and just for fun I made that with win10 too, but I do not like it.

Running Windows 8 from my USB stick, it was really very fun to see the surprise faces of those who look with your eyes barred your USB stick booting on their desktop or laptop installing related drivers, and it would do it even if there was no HD of any kind inside of their machines.
Only one thing was absolutely necessary: to access the BIOS of the guest machine to select the USB stick as the first booting drive, and you was done.
Windows 8 really contained an exaggeratedly wide amount of available drivers and then it booted on almost anything by automagically installing all the needed drivers on the fly.
Not knowing about Win10, 11 because I'm no longer interested on this purpose.

However, maybe I think in a singular way about the following, that's my way, but to date the most reliable means (drives) for your backup remains IMHO the good old mechanical HDD (that's, not the SSD), but this is a different thread.

Even at the cost of looking condescending, it is impossible not to mention all moderators and administrators who dedicate their time, their knowledge and experience and their patience to help anyone needs help day by day, and there are many of us from that other side.

There are also so many members, not naming anyone, who contribute with the same spirit to help anyone asking kindly about a problem or an exchange of views, and sometimes even without much of that (kindness), sometimes making available to the community all their knowledge, which is often really a lot of stuff.

Since I noticed that posting not only can help others, but not rarely can bring please and in other way a kind of help to oneself and before this thread becomes irrelevant, not only the due deserved mentions, but also: thanks! :smash:
