The speaker wires also form the RF antenna. Ferrite Rings or split RF filters can be recommended.
I'm back with the good news !
After many tries with changing different capacitors from the st-by board, trying to attach a PE to casing and so on, solving the ticking relay problem was a simple firmware update. It doesn't tick anymore and it's working great. I guess it was all about a malfunctioning or corrupt firmware.
I do not advise for anyone who doesn't know how to properly do the procedure.
If anything goes wrong, problem with the optical signal, power failure when upgrading/ updating will result in a permanent non working cpu, command board and your amp will be a heavy brick!
I suggest doing it trough a UPS power supply if you have one, connecting the amp and the cd-dvd your playing with.
I'm sharing a folder from my drive with the firmware wave and the service manual for A-S701.
BTW, the firmware goes also for A-S501 and A-S301 amps as well.
Inside the manual you get all the information you need for updating your firmware if you have such a ticking st-by board like was mine.
You need to make an audio cd with the wave I shared.
I updated this with a generic DVD player connected trough optical with the 701 optical in.
Before the procedure I insist please check twice if all the signal path is correct and you hear trough the amp the file that is written on your cd.
It is a digital signal so you'll hear some crackles and some noise all about 29 seconds or so.
I am not responsible for anything you are trying to do to your device, that is at your own risk!
Good luck !

My AS701 has started doing this in the last few weeks, whether in standby or powered off. Always there is one relay click, and then again 30 seconds later.
I'm waiting to hear from Yamaha service, but as this unit is out of warranty, I'm not hopeful.
Also if the firmware CD is available anywhere I'd be very interested in trying that as I have the matching CD player that can do the upgrade.

I have the same problem with new Yamaha A-S501 that I bought three months ago. I i'll be happy to try the update solution but I can't find it.
In your case it's covered by warranty, so just contact Yamaha for service.I have the same problem with new Yamaha A-S501 that I bought three months ago. I i'll be happy to try the update solution but I can't find it.
Before I use the warranty I want to be sure that the problem is not me.
I'm doing diffrent tests, So now I connect the amp to a diffrent outlet in a diffrent room , and for almost 2 days I didn't got any clicks sound.

gsgleason please let me know if you got an answer from Yamaha.
I bought mine second hand, so they won't cover it. I told them about a service advisory I heard about, and the rep I spoke to found it and said that it could be repaired at a service center.Unfortunately it came back again, same thing 1 relay click, and then again 30 seconds later, when powered off and in standby.
gsgleason please let me know if you got an answer from Yamaha.
In your case, just contact Yamaha. I used their online form. They called me within a couple days. Provide your proof of purchase and they should take care of you.
Thanks gsgleason I'll contect Yamaha and ask them about the firmware CD fix. I'll update you.
I uploaded a video on youtube showing the problem.

You have to make this wav into CDA then use instructions from the firmware update manual. This works for 301, 501, 701, 1100.
From my understanding CDA is just a table of contents, so to speak, with no actual payload. I'm not sure how this is possible given just a WAV.https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qJGuQCZwt_JBTEnP43GBigmWtvt-4RdF/view?usp=sharing

It is a wav with the firmware on it, you have to make it an audio format CD (CDA) and follow the Firmware update procedure. Please refer to the service manual for the firmware update, and 100% caution on this, if something is happening during the update procedure, power failure etc, the device is not operable anymore. From my understanding CDA is just a table of contents, so to speak, with no actual payload. Thank you. I was able to write the wav directly to disc with this command:It is a wav with the firmware on it, you have to make it an audio format CD (CDA) and follow the Firmware update procedure. cdrecord -v -pad speed=1 dev=/dev/sr0 -dao -swab A-S701_501_301_MAIN_1100.wav
I then performed the update from my CD300, and it now shows version 12.
I'll see if the relay clicking changes.
What is your version before updating.?Thank you. I was able to write the wav directly to disc with this command:

Is the problem solved?
As per my limited knowledge and what I have seen in the service manual of Yamaha 202 / 303 /403 - they use screwable lugs on PCB ground and screw it to the chassis. Please consider that I am driving in the dark with no headlights. I have to rely on experience.
Any class I device should have its metal case connected to PE and a class II device isn't required to have that but most of these have plastic casings. Your leakage to chassis is logical and for that reason alone the chassis should be connected to PE. I build PSU's and this is a normal phenomenon and PE solves it straight away. Then the question comes up how to connect audio GND to PE 🙂
However I am not in the details of this device and why Yamaha had its Chinese subcontractor produce it like this (I am convinced only the label is "Yamaha"). If it would be my device I would certainly use a 3 prong IEC inlet without any delay as I am convinced PE to be a must with metal casings. That is if you like your life and that of your family members. If you are a dare devil you could use a 3 prong IEC inlet with built in mains filter with the right current ratings as well. Beware that examination has to be done whether/where audio GND is connected to chassis. When audio GND is connected to the chassis and no PE is used then it is built like many a DIY device: wrong 😉 It will then take effort to make it both safe and correct. This issue would have been found when certification institutions would still be testing devices that are imported.
I am glad the 10 nF cured the problem as I found out many seem to have the same issue with these but no one seems to have solved it. Therefor I would give it some time to see if it really is solved 100%.
Your remark on "stupid relay" should be "stupid omitted capacitor".
Also for star ground they use a 5 or 7 point copper star piece soldered on PCB and each circuit ground comes to individual fingers of the copper star and one finger of the star goes to the chassis. There is no PE.
May be I had an error in reading the diagram and referencing on PCB layout photo in the service manual.
Before update it was v10. IT hasn't clicked since, so I'd say the problem is solved, yes. What is your version before updating.?
Is the problem solved?
It's unfortunate that Yamaha won't just let people update their firmware and requires people to pay exorbitant fees to get the issue addressed.
