World's Best Tweeters Face-off :: Subjective comparison

Jon,

Yeah I'm not sure why he says don't x them too low, the 140-15s have an FR of 500hz, so I would think they should be able to do what you've used them at without any problems. But I'm glad to hear you've had no problems with them that low.

10 years, I didn't know they'd been around that long. I'm also glad to hear that you didn't hear any difference between the two transformers, that's a cash savings. Yes be careful with those screwdrivers around the ribbons, lol.

26000 hours, now that's a lot. IF you liked them all that time why change now.

The thing about putting some foam in front of the tweeter could cause some memory problems which of course affects the spectral decay.

Face,

Looking at the AudioExcite website he shows his tests for the 140-15s and it shows that with no pads the response has a slight rise going up in freq, if that is what you're referring to when you said "takes a hit".

well, at least i stayed in the RAAL family with the 210-10D 🙂

i didnt really think of changing my 140-15D... but then i tried the Voxativ mid/widband and i knew i could push it very high... So the 210-10D suddenly became a suitable option.

Is it now better or just different ? I honestly don't know yet.

One way or the other: you cannot go wrong with either the 140-15D and the 70-20XR or the 210-10D well integrated.

You keep talking like that and it's going to make my choice easier, lol. Didn't you just sell your 140-15s?

The lower you go on these ribbons the higher the HD gets too. Below 2khz it's getting around .5 to 1%, can you hear that, who knows, everyone is different in what levels of HD they can hear or live with.

A friend runs the Raven 3.2 down to 1khz (6db xover) and they sound great. Mind you even at loud passages the Ravens are only getting maybe a couple of watts because they are so efficient (100db/2.83v/1m).

Maybe you should look into getting a pair of the Raven 3.2s, they are not made anymore but I'm sure you could find a used pair.

Walter, i think the easiest and most effective path is to try by yourself, not to rely on other's evaluations. Buy the driver(s) that inspire you the most, compare it in your own system, then sell what don't need. Maybe you'll end up keeping your Esotar ? 🙂

..the Raven's have more in common with the Aurum Cantus G1.

Again, a "thinner" sound than the RAAL's depending on the crossover components and the accompanying amplifier.

Look for Evolution Acoustics on Youtube for some idea.

Note that a low crossover freq. is not the same as a higher crossover freq. with regard to mid-driver integration.

Be careful. 😉

..no doubt, the Raven is better, better engineered and executed. But they are both very similar drivers with pleated ribbons.

I think I remember on the Asylum an owner of the Aurum Cantus being very pleased with a series 1st order high-pass on the G1 a bit below 2 kHz (..and a SET amplifier). On the plus-side, the ribbons don't cost a lot to replace.

-as you go higher in freq. you start to face problems with vertical integration (combing/lobing artifacts). i.e the potential of a really poor linear response not very far off the 0 degree vertical axis. (..of course you have this problem with higher freq.s anyway due to the "line" structure of the ribbon. It's just that it can happen lower in freq..)

I realise this thread is a bit ribbon biased but just thought I'd show these beauties I received today
