There's a middle of the road way to EQ drivers and a few different technical ways to do it. You're still using PEQ, that's fine, but for me the test will be uninteresting if done with pink noise. You'd include the room if you do. Just Measure with a sweep in REW and look at the IR...
I take it this is a single driver on test? I'm just proposing to use a more valid way of EQ. Take the room out as much as you can. With REW you can easily do that. Very common technology on this forum 🙂. Even more high tech is available (and often used on this forum).
I hope tomahack will bring you up to speed.
No problem.
I'll ask Tomahawk to bring his gears and verify all the set-up. Modifications if needed afterwards
Wow, what a day.
We go from ''no EQ please it's too advanced for us folks'' to ''your EQing is not enough''

ok let's do a sidebet here:
I think measures with 1/3 oct RTA + pink noise will lead to final EQ points that will be very similar to what could request 1/200 oct + sweeps/REW measures.
you in, Tom ?
50 bucks.

How do you define "very similar" ? Lap times in F1 are very similar but determine the first and last place.
If we're to be limited to 3 or 4 EQ bands, we'd probably be able to measure using a box of Q-tips and few bottles of beer.
No need to go all NASA about it... Fullrange drivers will need a kick in the butt starting from 400hz and the others will need some top-end boost. That's pretty much the whole story. Then, you will use the remaining 1 or 2 EQ bands left to adjust some annoying peaks or dips in-between, which probably won't be as bad as we think, except for some wideband/fullrange or pro drivers...

well, propose anything reasonnable and i'm in. 🙂
FYI: please stay in the audible domain.
i.e. anything less than 0.5db with a Q factor of more than 1.0 won't be audible for 99.9% of people.
but then again, we can start later a new blind test about that very topic, if need be. But not this week, please.

Hey bytheway, if the purpose of this test is to make the drivers indistinguishable from each others, then i think we're not on the same page.
What i'm interested to know it's beyond that.
Level-matched is mandatory, we all agree on that for obvious reasons.
All compared within the very same bandwith, of course.
All at the same listening distance, with the very same music excerpts and environnements.
But i will not go crazy with a custom 500 bands EQ for each drivers, just so they're perfectly matched.
Then, why not strap the head of the participants on the chair, to avoid them finding the drivers with the dispersions caracteristics... See what i mean ?

Bring your 1980's stuff and EQ my setup the best you can. I will then run a sweep at 1/12 oct to show how off you really are. If that doesn't cut it, nothing will. Very easy to be within 1dB @ 1/3 smoothing. Impossible at 1/12 oct.

Well. If it is in fact possible, wouldn't it be interesting to know? 50$ cheap mid indistinguishable versus a 1000$ exotic via some accurate EQ? I want to know.

If i bring my Litebrite and mic to your place, and then EQ your system the best i can, you will be mesmerized by the results and completely fall into a musical trance that could spiritually change your life for ever. We don't want to risk that. 😀

I officially withdraw my bet with you then. I knew something like that was coming! 🙄
It's a dead-end, because if participants do identify the drivers, you will blame the EQing. And no EQing will never be enough if the results are not at your satisfaction (read: that you win).

I give you the benefit of the doubt. I'm pretty confident that identification will be next to impossible even with your antique apparatus 🙂

I hate you.
(but i laughed.)
But the Trump/Clinton bet is still going, though.
You won't escape on that one!
