Wilmslow Audio TL12/Prestige problem

Yes they are the same speaker, the reference to HiFi Answers. in italics at the very top of the first page confirms that. Many thanks for giving me the link, it was rather nostalgic to see the article again. It was also a lot of fun to build I recall.

Just to close this thread. ATC have repaired the speakers ( £600) after a wait of 13 weeks. They sound fine now but I haven't yet checked them with a mic and REW.

Very many thanks for all your help and patience, it was very helpul and much appreciated.

My current project is building the WAD 300B PSE amplifier. Not my first tube amp build but definitely the most expensive !

Cheers Malcolm

They replaced both cones but despite me asking what the problem was they didn't say. So I am none the wiser. The speakers had sat, in their unopened boxes, for about 10 years in the spare bedroom, not subject to shocks or unusual temperatures. So I can't help wondering if it was a maufacturing fault. Apparently the speakers of that era had the cones glued in place.

It looks plausible giving ATC the option to admit to a fault and repair at no cost or to keep quiet and charge for the repair. A tricky test for a company.

An alternative explanation might be that Wilmslow sold the drivers to someone else who abused them (e.g. too much power "breaking in", getting something in the gap,...) and returned them. Wilmslow put them back on the shelf possibly knowing they were faulty or possibly not and then later sold them to you. In which case ATC may be without fault and might have learnt from poor past experiences to keep quiet rather than tell a customer that they have abused the driver.

That's life. Sometimes one just doesn't know and has to take this sort of thing on the chin. Good to see it iresolved though.

The boxes were sealed with ATC tape so it unlikely WA opened them or tested them. But then again neither did I ! An expensive mistake. As raymondj says after ten years I can hardly expect a free repair. But I am philosophical about it. When I have finished the second speaker I will have an exellent speaker system and if they last as long as the Kefs I will be still be enjoying them on my 112th birthday !

I started a forum about my 300B PSE's but I can't now find it. Apart from some ambiguity over the earthing which a respondant kindly sorted out I am having no trouble so far. But I am still building the cabinets and fitting the hardware.
