WiiM Ultra: who has it and who has already opened it?

removed the switcher supply and soldered a screened power cable to where the +12v and 0 12v pins connected, terminated with a DC connector. Using a 12V switching wall wart feeding the supercapacitor device, but have linear supply on order so shall compare.

I'm surprised the wall wart is happy with a 3F cap to charge!
takes a few minutes to get fully charged )there are 6 leds that indicate state of charge) and then seems ok, though only had it a few days

my audio chain is DLNA library on laptop with HD attached via usb->Ultra lan connected->usb out->Gustard U18->I2S to DAC. Tried coax out to dac and there's quite a decrease in SQ compared to I2S, so if I wasn't using I2S probably wouldn't be trying to upgrade the Ultra.

Oh, and it needs the cleanest power you can come up with. There was definitely a jump in resolution when I hooked up my giant Lifepo4 batteries.

I am not even sure the Wiim Ultra is necessary anymore with this device if one doesn't need the extra inputs. Yesterday I was in the hotel with my soldering iron and
one of my Chinese R2R DACs albeit with the SMSL PO 100pro. Hooked up to my smart phone using USB Pro player in bit perfect mode and I was getting phantastic sound on my Sennheiser HD540 reference II streaming Tidal.

If accessories or a different setup overshadow or are more important than the main device it may indeed not be necessary anymore.

However the Ultra is the thread subject 🙂 I suggest we keep to the Ultra.

Mine had a fw update yesterday, it’s been running in now constantly for a few days . The analog output has improved but I still much prefer the external dac . If you want all in one solution there will be better higher cost alternatives available.
My dac , reclocker and jlsounds i2soverusb all have separate regged psu’s . I paid £270 for the Ultra on Amazon UK Black Friday deal , it’s now back up to full price £350 .
For a cheap easy to use music server it’ll do me for now .

Regular firmware updates are good IMHO. I had devices in the past that were outdated and did not communicate with recent stuff anymore (or did not incorporate certain services) as no updates were issued. Also had devices that needed a paid for firmware update to be able to be used again after repair. Or devices that had firmware dependent on a third party software company that was sold.

So I can not understand why some think (free) firmware updates are evil.

Apparently Wiim have been good with the updates , from what I’ve read if people have any issues they fill out a report send it to Wiim and they’ll do what they can to solve bugs etc with the update . They also add features . I was amazed how easy it was to set up , it’s been streaming Amazon music unlimited perfect so far .
I don’t know what spdif is like , I’ve only tried analog output and usb out to my dac . I’ve not tried any of the PEQ

Jean-Paul,
Do you use the Ultra has streamer towards an external DAC.
I had perhaps bougth one during the B. D. II it had an usb input and another one por output.
It seems it is more à multimédia device , hifi, TV, DVD than an audiophile streamer.
Does it work with no ethernet externat world net work at the opposit of the famous Roon.
