Why English language is so popular ?

Well yeah, but here in the new world they were happy to beat other civilizations into submission well before the aliens arrived. I think they had seen plenty of that sort of tricks.

Hey I know, let's get back to the topic so snup doesn't have to leave?: Why is English so Popular? Certainly we can't blame the Spanish for this?

It is popular because it gives opportunities.

First off, Chinese is not a language.
Cantonese and Mandarin are the 2 main languages. English is everywhere because the English invaded and subjugated 60% of the planets population.
The kids love it because it's the language of the internet

Hi and sorry but there is something in your statements that crashes.
How someone can love to be subjugated ? are kids sick ? 🙄
Another point ... let's not underrate enjoyment.
I do not want to sound Freudian but human beings strive to reach pleasure.
Why language must be a pain ? why ?
i have two personal experience.
I worked for an Italian company in Hungary and now in Norway.
In both countries the people i met were just fantastic. Loved them and i could have lived in both places (food aside ... italians are a little picky on food) quite happily.
Actually for some aspects better that in my own country.
Of course in both cases i took language lessons.
Well i cannot explain the difficulties, the pain during the lessons and in the end i had to give up with the idea very sadly.
I have been to UK instead just for a 3 days course.
I can tell you that if i had to move there i am sure that language lessons would be much more fun because the language is more user friendly.
I also like English humor, by the way ... 😀
I want to make it clear that a deep knowledge of a language implies always years of dedication. And maybe a native partner (this is a very useful teacher, especially wives ... they tend to talk a lot and say "listen and repeat").
But i think that i could love English much more than any other foreign language.
When i hear of kids forced to learn their own language this sounds to me like something not right. What have they done to be forced to learn some extremely painful languages ?
Then of course a language represents also a model of society. You may like it or not but if you like it it is normal to want to be part of it. To communicate with the natives.
The language must be slaved to people and not viceversa.
Language is the mean not the end.
I would go even further.
Engineers should take care of language, not language professors because they are not focused on the goal for a language, that is effective communication.
I am referring to a possible global language of course.
Another last thing about a community. A group of people is not a community if they do not share the same language.
This is the very first thing.
For instance the EU is a strange beast where an unbelievable amount of money is spent on translations between languages.
Is this really a community ? do not think so.
Some years ago i replaced my boss in a technical meeting between european delegates. I went happily because the buffet was usually fantastic 😱
The project was quite ridiculous and the UK delegate sent a letter with negative comments (he was very right) and did not attend the meeting.
Just say in which language the meeting was held ? english.
In that occasion i had the confirmation of english being a natural winner.
There is one thing that i do not like and i do not understand of English people at least the one i met.
They tend to talk fast and crunching words. It seems that they do not want to be understood. Like they do not care.
Instead i like well spoken and slow english.
That would be a great service to the people trying to improve it.
A good example of well spoken english ...

Yes, that was a simplification by the missionaries making a written version of Hawaiian. But it stuck. One thing that makes Hawaiian names look difficult is that the spelling gets pushed together. I live on 'ili ili (pebble) street, but it gets pushed into Ilili. Depending on the font, that can look like all the same letter! Going down the hill is Ka 'imi nani street (the seeker of beauty) but it gets pushed together so that it's hard to see the words. Kaiminani.

Hawaiian must be a great language for puns, there are so may homophones.

Are you kidding? My favorite bizarreness is the terminal "x." Sometimes you say it, sometimes you don't. Ditto "l".
That's a small matter compared to English. At least in French au, eau & Ô are always pronounced the same way. Ditto A U, OU, I, IN, IM, ON, EN. They don't shift their pronunciation willy-nilly depending on what word they are in. Despite the rococo spelling, French dictionaries do not need pronunciation guides, English dictionaries can't do without them.

Russian is pretty good at spelling things as they are pronounced. Bulgarian even better, as you know. One would hope no Slavic language ever becomes global. True grammatical torture! Worse than German, even.

kids do not feel forced to learn.
thats why you can put them in school and tell them to listen and they will automatically learn, while having fun.
My daughter was 7, when I uprooted her from England. Three months later she spoke danish, without me ever teaching her a word of danish.
Go figure

starting school in England is a harrowing experience for most kids, because the start so early in life, that their motoric system is not developed enough to even hold a pencil properly. Then the feel a failure already from day 1.
Mainly because they are then sorted into stupid and not so stupid, by their teachers and given attention accordingly. This selective education of children continues all the way through schoollife, until they finally can decide, if they want to go to Oxford or Cambridge.
Or decides that education sucks and wont bother with it.
Thats why I moved back to Denmark, when she reached school-age, which is 6 in DK.

forcing them to wear a uniform and pretend they are all the same, to avoid mobbing, is the most lame of it all. As if they can't think of something to tease eachother with other than the clothes they wear.
boys will be boys and girls will be girls.
good luck with changing that.

Its a lot cheaper doing all the translations, rather than having all the different currencies and taxes between so called countries, really combined small kingdoms. In the old days not that long ago, imagine taking goods down the Rhine river where they stopped you at almost every bend to pay yet another royal castle owners his share, 1st you had to see the money changers, b/c he didn't need your produce or chicken eggs.
well the EU was a dream of the most progressive / dominate western European country that came true only after 2 world wars. In my mind those wars were the unnecessary result of the all the ruling monarchies fear and stupidity, and the second one was due to unfinished biz of the 1st ending too soon. IMO reading between the lines in all the history books I could get my hands on.

Hi i have a question ... do you think that all languages present the same learning difficulties ?
I do not think so. I think that there are much more difficult languages than other ... just try Hungarian for one.
If a same concept can be described and communicated more efficiently (i.e. with less use of resources) why not switch language ? why ?

Interesting. I think i made the mistake to judge only from my point of view.
I guess that Danish has some connections with Norwegian.
As an Italian, i finf Norwegian much much more difficult to learn than English
and i mean always at survival level ... not advanced of course.
Maybe English has more connections with Danish than with Italian.
All languages have some similarities with other languages.
For instance if i talk slowly in italian a spanish person understand, and viceversa.
Then maybe portoughese and then french ...
If i think that Romans founded London ... this is their revenge.

I think the monetary union of Europa is a collaborative effort, between German/Austrian moneymen and their american counterparts. While warring away, they happyly traded goods with eachother.
Greed and other ethical mindsets doesn't come into it, surely.
Is it just a way of getting into the historybooks and be remembered as peacekeeper extraordinaire ?
gold and silver has always been the currency, when banknotes and worthless coins couldn't buy you anything.
And it all depends on who is writing the historybook.

And it all depends on who is writing the historybook.

yup, we all know the winners write the books that don't get rubbished.
when you read more and more versions, the conclusions become clearer, im sure i've read more than the average history buff. keep reading
BTW when the combined kingdoms realized the value of minting their own currencies, maybe that's when all the real troubles started.
the fighting Kingdoms lose more treasure than any other human endeavors put together.
