why are old school amps worth so much?

The insides are probably a Z200C2. I bid on a couple of Zapco as they went real cheap. But I didn't try too hard to win them because I have enough Zapcos already. Still... I regret not getting them now.

But I did buy a '25 to life' Punch 150 for $160 shipped. So that's why I passed on the Zapcos.

Sorry for the shameless plug but I'm selling my earthquake phd2 and the pyramid/PPI 2075 on ebay. Might even sell the a600.2 amps. I'm thinking of getting one multichannel amp and calling it a day. I don't have any subs to run with the phd2 and even though the ppi's are awesome I am all about shaving weight on my car. Although I love deep loud bass I don't need it and no one that rides with me cares for anything louder than headunit power 🙁

Old

Man this thead starting to wander. The best thing about "Old School Amps" most still sound pretty good and they are repairable. Too bad that sound quality goes down so fast as the car goes up in speed. Everthing sounds better at the competition.

I really think there is only one "old school" era of car audio, and that is of the first ten years it was being produced. When all of the major companies had just sprouted and decided to move into the car audio business. Its almost like calling Biggie Smalls or Kanye West "old school" when they aren't. I don't really listen to rap/hip hop but I consider earlier rappers like Too Short, Easy E, and groups like NWA "old school" for example. I really get tired of hearing the term "old school" get used for everything. Just like how someone mentioned the amps being sold on ebay that are barely ten years old being sold as "old school", give me a break...🙄

I am 40 and started out in car audio in 1988. I use 1996-2000 era RF in both of my vehicles. While I wouldn't call them old school like my punch 75 (1st generation), they are from a time when RF used heavy duty heatsinks, top quality components, were still US made and still were being produced by their original engineers before they left in 2002.

I have one of those 25 to Life Punch 150s that I need to pull from an install. Every now and again, it flat out refuses to turn on. Then when I start probing wires with my meter, only to see that everything is good at the amplifier, it kicks on. I am assuming it has a bad solder joint at the circuit board for either the power, ground, or remote... At least I hope that is what my problem is.

I'm 40 too! My 1st system (1987) was a Clarion deck, Pyramid PB600 amp, & 4 Kenwood 6.5" subs mounted on the rear deck of a 1981 Honda Civic 4 Door Sedan. I currently have 2 Punch 45's, a blown Autotek 7600, a blown Profile, a Profile California A400XL, a Hifonics Taurus in the wife's Neon, & a Boston Acoustics GT-42 in my Ranger Supecab! I have my brother's Audiobahn A2150HC & Power Acoustik Fire & Ice F12X-1600 in my basement. I'm a 1 ohm stable (class AB) kinda guy!

I KNEW my Fultron amp looked like a Soudstream! I was going thru AmpGuts to see the exact Soundstream model and couldn't find it.

"MEMPHIS CAR AUDIO (FULTRON/ARIA)
Yep, Fultron's new name is Memphis (as in the home of Graceland). Arthur Fulmer, the head of Fultron said he wanted a timeless sounding name, so they went with Memphis. Didn't really see any new product at the booth, besides the knockoffs of the old Soundstream Reference amplifiers."

Haha the first amp I had in my car was a pyramid pb600g, black with red letters and the cheezy thd picture on the top. The pyramid ran two mtx road thunder subs in an mtx box and a sherwood eq booster ran my sony 3.5" and kicker 4" midrange. Deck was a sony cdx4080 pullout with the external removeable "amp" lol

Does anyone have a opinion on the article in the lastest Car Audio Mag. Saying that so-called old-school amp are not better than contemporary amps in production. And saying that "even at best of best they only are par for the course".
