I suspect there will be a huge reliance on 220nm UVC in the near future in all public high density spots.

UVC kills the bugs really good -- bugs and RNA! My wife uses it in the molecular bio lab and it doesn't get everywhere like ehtylene oxide. Far UVC may be much less hazardous for humans. See Dr. Brenner from Columbia's "Center for Radiological Research"/

You probably knew that already.
From what I heard far UVC is quite harmless to humans as it doesn't penetrate the skin deep enough to cause damage.
But that was from a single source so I won't bet my life on it. 😉
This is the violett range of the light that is dangerous for health if one is talking of crab disease and mutation inside a personn. Infrared which has a longer wave length arm less at equal quantity and time expositions. Gama range (Hulk) that is even shorter than ultra violett is even more dangerous...
Skin specialists have warned these days not to use such devices or pulsed light devices for virus killing purpose !
I bet some portable devices for cleaning food and goods will be seen very soon if not already rebadged from existing care or aesthetic personnal devices... with more or less efficienty about the task but a lot of dangerosity... One has to remember even breathing bleach is dangerous for health -diseases known for some people working in closed swimming pool areas if I remember some readings or chemical industries-

Columbia university (IIRC) has been working on the use of 220 nm UVC to kill viruses. Apparently it cannot penetrate skin nor the eye.
If it pans out, it can be used as a method for protecting people in socially dense environs.

Yeah, there's a growing evidence for it's efficacy at the >5 um penetration depth, but it's definitely $$ for now.

Was down 7# last week, 6.5# this week...no cookies, no English muffins and less bread...also running through the stuff like gabanzos and urad dal for dinner.
WRT UV -- we now use UV LEDs in the lab/demo line, but mercury lamps on the assembly line. UV LEDS are economic in a lot of operations.
Oh, another thing which kills bugs and RNA -- the plasma oven!
