I am about to begin construction of an Aleph 5. However, I also want to make a preamp for this unit. I'm not sure whether to make an Aleph P1.7 or the Zen balanced line stage preamplifier. I feel I don't need the extra complexity and cost of the remote control on the P1.7, however I will build it if it really sounds alot better. Can someone give me some advice on the relative performance of the two? Special thanks must go to Mr Pass for his willingness to share his designs.

The Aleph 2 and Aleph 5 are practical identical, with the exception of the extra output devices of the Aleph 2, giving more output power. I would assume that the same answer still stands, the BOSOZ (bride of son of zen, AKA, the balanced zen line stage).

Similar to Greg above, I aim to make preamp to partner Aleph 5 project. BOSOZ would suit my needs for reasons stated above.
My question: I'm considering doing BOSOZ in PTP. Are there any pros or cons to building this on single-sided copperboad, using the coppered side as a groundplane, simply connecting any signal grounds to it wherever the component happens to be. I would, of course, aim to keep these earth 'points' as close as possible to each other.
PSUs would most likely be in seperate enclosure. Also intend to do this fully dual-mono.
(BTW, I will have to 'make do' with Naim 32.5 preamp till Pass preamp is completed- sorry NP. Has anybody else tried this combo? )

I'm in the starting phase on a P v.1,7, and want to implement a "normal" volume-control (remote-operated).
When reading the service-manual, I understand that the gain-pots can be used as vol-pot. (And just leave out the "RELAY-pot-vol-control" on the output). Is this a way to go?
Or should I just use it "conventional", on the input of the circuit?
(Even an ALPS would probably not like to be used on the output?).

I have a balanced linestage and have used ALPS both on the input and on the output.

Regarding that ground plane idea above, I believe Hart Audiokits in the UK used a similar idea in a MM/MC pre-preamp. Anybody made, used, or heard that kit?
