The cheap "Party" boxes have been returned by my middle daughter.
They started whizzing and squeeeaking and became unlistenable when turned up to party volume.
I made these from some roadkill boxes I picked up and all the cheap hot melt glue seams look like they have dried out and vibrated loose.
OK I can fix that but I promised my neighbor a pair of cheap speakers for his shed and I want to re-use these repaired boxes.
I also want to use the little 4" midrange in something else.
My mate is a saxophone player and I know he likes a hot top-end in his speakers as he is always turning up the treble control when he's here listening.
I have a pair of the Peerless 830656 here which will work but I'm wondering if the bigger 830657 would be a better choice if I can squeeze it in.
Using two cheap 8" woofers and crossing around 300 to suit the existing coils I have, the tweeter I want to use is a cheap one and needs to be crossed around3K.
I think 3c to 3k is more suitable for the smaller Peerless but just double checking with the experts here

Use the 656 for a 3k xover, as it should be much easier and not beam as badly as the 657 would. Be advised, those drivers could become scarce in the near future or currently.
I tried to cross the 830657 (or rather, its very close cousin the SDS160) at 3,000Hz when trying to clone a commercial DIY project. It sounded much better crossed at about 2,000, although my alleged crossover efforts meant that the speaker still didn't sound quite right.
Aside from the important issue of efficiency - spec for the 830656 is 84.5dB and for the -7 it's 88dB - the 830656 would be a better choice if that will work for you, it's a very nice driver for the relatively small amount of damage, at least when I bought mine.
Both Peerless have been around for many years, but knowing the sort of start/stop supply issues with other Peerless/Tymphany products noted above by Wolf, who knows?

Efficiency wise the bigger driver but the smaller is already on the shelf so kinder to the wallet.
👍 what Boswald said.... call the extra dBs on the woofer 'Baffle step correction'

I do exactly that on one of my systems: LF/MF crossover point is the BSC frequency and I just have a bit more gain on the LF. The slope isn't quite right but it works pretty well.
Just out of interest what are peoples thoughts on the Vifa Logic BC14SG76-08
At $40- each they are in the affordable range
The BC18 is cheaper but there isn't quite enough room to fit a 6" now as I've cut a hole to suit the smaller Peerless driver

One of the reasons I ask is that it is louder than the little Peerless by 3dB and being a truncated frame will fit in the same space. I've always used Vifa drivers as mids but never the cheaper Logic range
True, but per the plots only over a very narrow BW above ~1 kHz where the other is starting to roll off, so guess it boils down to what your desired BW is and what sort of EQ used to get the desired response (shelving Vs boosting).
Thanx for pointing that out.True, but per the plots only over a very narrow BW above ~1 kHz where the other is starting to roll off, so guess it boils down to what your desired BW is and what sort of EQ used to get the desired response (shelving Vs boosting).
I'll stick with what I have and save to money.
I've used the Vifa PAE Logic BC25 tweeter and thought it sounded the same as the regular VifaOne of the reasons I ask is that it is louder than the little Peerless by 3dB and being a truncated frame will fit in the same space. I've always used Vifa drivers as mids but never the cheaper Logic range

Thanx mate but I'll go with the little Peerless.I have one SB13PFC25-4 you can have if it's any use.
I really don't need to accumulate more drivers, I don't think I'll get to use all in my stash as it is.
Rather than buy new drivers; and as people keep telling me I can't rely on factory specs; I just ordered a Woofer Tester.
The Dayton unit as it is both available and I have the money there.
I'll be interested to see what some of these really old drivers test like. and whether some of the Jaycar are close to the catalogue specification.

I'll pay for postage and packing if you have to chuck them/it/stuff out Peter.
Always been happy to do that.

Look what I just found on eBay

Just looking and not buying but has anybody ever had anything to do with these?
I have a spare Sansui centre speaker that uses 4R clones of the Peerless driver, I could use those and pad them down a few dB, in some respects they are a better driver than the Peerless but need rebating
