Where to look / Suggestions for a beginner in the DIY audio world?

Yeah, some kits do come out expensive. I wasn’t making a specific recommendation for that kit, rather to make you aware of a source for drive units, crossover components etc. Coils and capacitors for crossover use can get expensive very quickly, but a crossover can make or break a design. Allen b has a really great thread on crossovers in the speaker forums. Well worth a read.

I’d get on with amp building for now as your speakers seem decent and you only have a small space to fill.

I’d only consider a Class A if I wasn’t paying my own electricity bill and happy for someone else to take the hit and possibly not even then! Big heaksinks, case and transformers all add up even though the rest of the parts cost is similar to many other amps.
Lm3886s will be back in stock at RS shortly.

I am surprised that no UK based member seems to have posted.

The main thing to remember for UK based users is that virtually every item
ordered from NON UK suppliers carries expensive shipping charges and that
20% VAT + smaller import duty will apply to total cost + shipping.

Also many kits which include power transformers may well have NON UK mains
voltage specs.

That said I would start with a chip amp. They tend to use smaller heatsinks and
have fewer components - therefore less expensive.

Speakers need to be relatively sensitive (say, 87 db per watt or so) and easy to drive.

@Jeffh01 Agree... but I am a simple culchie!

Best luck
