What’s On the Bench Tonight (OBT)

It uses a lot of power I think - has its own battery that needs to be recharged and might add a lot more bulk to a phone. The unit integrates nicely with iphone.

On the bench tonight is the installation of the drivers in the prototype Signature 100 cabinets. Ribbon tweeter, Dan Wiggins XBL woofer, and a racetrack passive radiator. I lined the inside of the cabinet with eggcrate foam and added some polyfill stuffing inside. The wires run through holes for the binding posts. Tape is used to seal it air tight. Ready for raw driver reponse measurements now.

Thanks. Late last night on the bench was the crossover development for the Signature 100’s. It’s looking really nice and sounding very “high end”. The resolution is crisp and distortion is very low. Interesting that the crossover is positive phase aligned and the step function is almost a transient perfect right triangle.

Temporary XO made with P2P Wago connectors:

Measured step response (woofer and tweeter same absolute polarity):

Listening to it and really liking what I hear. The highs of course, are sparkling as expected from a ribbon and without any harshness. I may pad it down a tiny bit to get more of a Harman House curve right tilt. The bass is surprisingly deep and distortion free. Reaching well into territory so that it won’t need a subwoofer.

More work on the Signature 100 XO. I adjusted the phase tracking to be smooth. The inverted tweeter response has a nice dip at 3.5kHz.

Here is the measures phase response - tracks super smoothly through the XO range and throughout the response.

Here is XO response showing inverted tweeter dip:

Measured distortion is very low. The tweeter is barely working since there is a 36ohm padding resistor on it. Should essentially be zero distortion at normal levels. There is a 2kHz blip from the woofer. Otherwise very good since XBL motor.

Here is the measured step response showing the excellent time alignment. Almost transient perfect. This will give very believable drums and percussion.

I have now ordered parts to make an internal P2P crossover in stereo.

Very nice dude...
Tonight on my not virtual, not even bench, is my original prototype monoblocs.
PPP 6P45S triode strapped making 113W @ 30Hz. Trioded. Using toridal power transformers (2 per channel interleaved). It's the poor mans tube power amp 🙂
Sorry for the wide shot, they are the original "silver" amps. I switched from aluminum to steel when I switched from point to point to circuit boards 🙂
Also, Grey says "Hi" ( Guinea pig)

Here's a closer look at this "sitting here for two years literally collecting dust" amp

Since it was rainy, and you guys started posting tube stuff...here is what was on my bench (floor) tonight.
An old, very old, el34 amp, which has been out of service. I made new HV supply (white box) and regulated heater supply (black box).
Tested triode, pentode and ul mode, quickly realized ul sounds best.
Tested el34, kt88, 6l6, various age and maker. Like vine, you pick what you like. All great fun.
Cheers!

If you had a custom wound EI output trafo where the core was shared, could there be some SuperSymmetry coupling? The topology looks a balanced output amp.

Here is my SuSyLu amp

I'm not sure about supersymetry to be honest.
I like the design though. At first, I though the "custom would EI transformer" was a common mode choke 🙂
Those heatsinks would kill me, price wise, unless I could find some scrap.
That's another reason I like tubes - no heatsink needed.

I do want to try to build something like I posted using depletion MOSFETs instead of tubes. But I doubt it will sound the same at all since a MOSFET is like a pentode, not a triode. I would love to use SITs but they are too much money, it's cheaper to use tubes.
I don't know if you saw the thread about my Modular amp... https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/modular-amplifier-1.375206/
