Via www.marktplaats.nl I got two cd950's and a cd951 for 30,35 and 50 Euros (also a FA950, DCC900, FT930, FV930, FC931 and 4 DRC9430 MKII, 2 F9412 and the 900 series recordplayer for about 200 euro total). All spic and span. Since you're in the same timezone I can advise you to be on the lookout between 23.00 and ...well I don't know... 1.30 (keep a window open, check "nieuw"). That's how I did it. Took me about a month. By the way, I noticed that the Philips SACD1000 utilises two DAC7's (2x max20 bit resolution) as DAC. Maybe I'll try to conceive a cdm9/44 900 series based sacd clone. Looks a lot better lol.
Thanks for the tip 😉
But I've never seen philips cd 900 series under 90€ there, I'm certainly not as lucky as you are
I won an ebay bid for a CD940 for 30€, but I'd prefer a CD950 or 951, that's for sure

Why what? Why I bought a CD940? 😉 Because the price was good, it has a CDM9, and looks good!
If the question is "why would I prefer a 950/951?", well... they are higher end (the 940 seems to be exactly the same as the 930/931), have a better dac, and... you told me that a 951 would be a better option than a 931😎
Just wanted to konw why you think it is a better cdplayer. Don't think it is better because I said so 😉

Maybe you don't consider yourself as a reliable source, but I do 😉
The 951 is also a higher end player than the 940 in the 900 series, that's why I think it's a better player.
But, if I'm wrong, tell me 😉
Maybe you don't consider yourself as a reliable source, but I do
I consider myself the most reliable source for me 😀
Although true in this case don't get fooled by higher typenumbers. It doesn't say everything.
But 951 has DAC 7 ( TDA1547 ) which I never liked much. I like machines with SAA7321 ( one of the first 1 bit chips from Philips ) better soundwise. 951 has a better board than the others in that series.
Anyone out there that likes TDA1547 ?

I'm not sure I've understood your answear correctly.
Are you telling me not to trust in "absolute" typenumbers (in example, trusting that CD951 is better than CD650)
Or are you talking about products from the same series? (like CD32/42/52/62/72)
If someone has a CD951 for sale... 😉

Both can be true.
After some hours listening to my first hifi cd player, that's what I think about the sound
Please don't forger that this is my first good player, I'm a beginner audiophile, that used to listen to music on low fi systems (cheap akai system, car, computer)
Now, my CDs sound better, like if something had been added to them.
The bass are relly here, low, deep, quite punchy but never boomy.
The highs are more present than before, detailed, and this gives a kind of "harsh" feeling, compared to low fi systems that laks seriously the highs
And finally, but not at least: I discover a lot of new details, that in fact aren't details at all! They are here, as for the rest of the music, I just didn't notice them before. The strange thing, is that now I can also hear them on low fi systems when I take care. The new player just makes them obvious, and helped me to discover them.
I know this player isn't certainly very good according to you all, but from the music I heard of it, I'm very satisfied.
I hope I'll also be abble to appreciate the future mods 🙂

Good to hear you are that satisfied. I have listened to my new cd player also, and I share most of your findings.
I am currently testing my new preamp, which I have finished tonight. I never enjoyed my music as much as I do now!
Let me know what mods you are preparing for your player, maybe I can use them for my CD950.
Cheers

I think I'll start with new opamps, maybe new caps (the electrolitics have to be changed every 10 years, don't they?)
when I'll have the time (and the money), maybe a new ps, clock, and dac
but before this, I'll certainly have shielded the PS, mechanical, and electronical sections. And there are some grounding arrangment that have to be done better.
As for the sound, without modifications, I listened to the player some more hours. I found another difference in the sound, compared to my cheap sources:
evrey sound, but particularely the cymbals, sound more real. At first I didn't find the reason, but now I've found:
the cymbals are "full", have a "complete" sound. They make Tchhhhh, I can head the T, the impact
on cheap players, you only hear chhhh
Why two DAC's
Hi
The SAA7310 is the decoder and supplies a non-o/s I2S signal to the SAA7322. The SAA7322 is a 1-Bit dac with onboard o/s and filtering. In your CDP it is only used to provide o/s and digital filtering. It outputs a 4*o/s 16-bit I2S signal to the SAA7350. The SAA7350 does the D/A conversion.
I hope this helps. If you want the datasheet for the SAA7310 and SAA7322, let me know.

Hi
Has anyone an idea why my CD62 has 2 dacs?
An SAA7322 and a SAA7350 (decoder is SAA7310)

Re: Why two DAC's
Whao, my old thread is coming back 🙂
Thank you for the info! I also came to the same conclusion, by reverse engeneering the PCB tracs and the datasheets...
The nice thing about this player is that it has 2 PCBs, the 2nd has the digital filter/dac/output stage on it, with power supply and non os I2S coming to it.
It will be easier to change the dac
The bad thing is that this player seems very rare, I never found the service manual

Service manual for CD62
Hi Bricolo
I think the CD62 is the same as the Philips CD850 with a different face plate. "Peng" and "Ashok" have the service manual for the 850.

CD850 vs CD62
Hi Bricolo
Looks like you got what you were after! Happy to see my memory still works. I was interested in the 850 when it was new in 1991, but could only afford a 624.
Good luck

I bought the CD62 some months ago, second hand.
It is like new, no fingerprints, no scratches (even not small ones on the display's window).
When I tested it, it played every cd, cdrs and even cdrws
For 40€ 🙂 With new cells in the remote control!

Hi Till,
When I see an unknown player on ebay, I always look at this page
http://www.blackpudding.fsnet.co.uk/digital_jitter/philips_laser.htm
to see which mechanics it uses
This link dosn't work for me...

Is there anywhere else I could find out witch laser is in witch CDP ???
....easy to buy the "wrong" player if you don't know !?...

For personal use I put this up.

It's only the philips part of the Digital Jitter Pages.
