Generally, I use only the volume pot/control that is on the unit when you buy it. Despite the popular notion from the pervasive everything-must-be-modified-camp that these are trash, I've never found that to be the case. I've experienced no channel imbalance, no noise, nothing detrimental at all. In short "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Sometimes I use my 6N3 "Sain Smart" brand tube buffer and turn the volume pot on the amp all the way up. Thus, relying on that volume pot to control the source volume.
Those $12 or so SMD (surface mounted device) type volume pots on eBay are quite nice. I've made several passives with those.
If you need the ability to switch to different sources, I highly recommend these inexpensive switch boxes.

Can't be beat under $100, maybe $150 or more. They make ALPS sound like poop.
Please provide link to an SMD pot.

I had no idea a stepped attenuator could be so cheap! Destroyer, have you used one of these? I wonder if they are thick or thin film resistors...
Wow. There are a ton of other stepped attenuators on eBay which spec thin film for slightly more money. You think they are all inferior?
URL?
3x the price of the one you linked, but well under $150! Might be good?
