What Raspberry Pi Based Music player do you use?

Everything else goes like Stig, so it's not the card. I also rechecked by flashing older versions, they work fine too.

When you need a player in each room it's not possible to plump for Rpi4s for all of them. I tend to reuse older SBCs and have a little Pizero tucked into a case with a battery and a PCM5102 that I can carry around to test amplifiers or listen to some music in the kitchen without having a permanent setup.

Volumio took 5 minutes to boot, the eggs are done and I'm out of the kitchen by then. DietPi boots in 20 seconds. That's 15 times as fast.

The problem is not the system, it's that Volumio checks for updates every single boot. It expects to be powered on 24x7. It expects a minimum level of hardware. It expects a certain speed SDC. It expects your network drives to be always connected and if it doesn't find the network when it boots, it needs to be rebooted.

It is a very high-maintenance piece of software, and if you get it working nicely it sounds really nice and works well. It just doesn't work for me at all, unfortunately. Doesn't mean it won't work for you.

I recently got a Rpi 4B - 4GB version along with official touchscreen. Started with piCorePlayer set up for a 'portable' music player solution within the house to be carried from one room to another. But issue with piCorePlayer it needs to be shutdown properly each time - I can't just unplug and carry it.

Tried Volumio since it loads entirely on to RAM hence no issue with unplugging it directly. I like the UI on this better. Even got the Rotary encoders working for volume control and play previous/next tracks. It integrates seamlessly with Spotify. I like it so much so that I'm planning to use it as replacement player in my car feeding clean signal to my processor [with the help of a Muse USB DAC - don't want to replace the factory head unit]. Only issue I see with Volumio is long boot up time [upto 5 mins at times].

Is there anyway to speed up Volumio boot up time!? Probably it's time to try Diet pi option and use any native music player that can play music from USB drive + Spotify!

Excuse the crude box - still awaiting delivery of official case and aluminium control knobs!

DietPi won't do for your use case, Som. It's most useful for those who run headless systems with web interfaces or app control. It is a more functional install, but is not centered around audio like Volumio is. Thus the interface LCD is not directly possible with DietPi unless you're keen to tinker with it.

Everything else is fine, you will need to install both LMS and Squeeezelite on the same device and they will communicate with each other. LMS can do internet radio, locally connected USB drives, and almost any online streaming service.

As for speeding up Volumio, best you ask on Github.

Pi Internet Radio

I have just finished build of an Internet Radio combined with an EL 84 Based stereo amplifier

The Radio itself contains a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4 GB memory, a 7 inch touchscreen, a HiFi Berry DAC+ pro, and a HifiBerry metal case.

Software is by Bob Rathbone, and the sound quality through my Bruce Heran JBAA with JJ EL84's and Edcor output transformers into cheap-*** Polk T15's is wonderful. I am currently building an active crossover by KM Tech to bi amp some much needed bass.

The rig is powered through a DIY hand-would toroid power transformer (details in the power supply blog). See the pictures at https://ibb.co/RT2FrLx

Tuning Dial

It is really attractive. Kinda looks like those old German "Piano Key" radios of the 50's. I do have one of those I rebuilt: It's a Lowe Opta "Truxa" about 1955 vintage. It works, but doesn't sound as good as the modern HI FI receivers.

Rathbone's design allows you to switch between two GUI's. One is radio only, and the other is radio, but with options for music server, USB stick, and Spotify. I am presently trying to get Spotify to work, but having trouble transferring my account from my phone to the radio.

7.0.1 was working fine for 3 weeks then while using it all of a sudden the library stopped being able the access the pi player. Configuration can be accessed and the database rebuilt but it still will not work play anything, curiously the usb access light blinks when play is pressed but the GUI is not responding and no sound. My last 6.x build work pretty good for 6 months and then nuked itself from space. It’s a pi 2 with a schiit usb modi 2, anyone else experienced this?
