Hi Patrick,
I know what you're saying, but this particular Jim Smith is a down-to-earth budget-friendly guy who emphasizes getting the most out of whatever you already have. He's not really selling much of anything, except his excellent book "Get Better Sound" which is a collection of fascinating practical (and sometimes odd yet effective) tweaks he's collected over the years.

Unfortunatelly, horn speakers were never affordable commercial solution and there is a slim chance they will ever be. Paying somebody $500 plus expenses to professionally set up $100k worth of equipment doesn't seem exorbitant. While I had only rudimentary , accidental exposure to AG speakers I do think that topologically it's a very pretty horn solution (AG trio) i.e round mid/upperbas , midrange , tweeter with separate bass channels. Regards
PS We're getting heavily out of topic 😉

According to Jim Smith, former AG distributor most problems with Avantgarde sound is related to improper set up. Thats why he is charging $500 a day plus transportation cost to make sure, the rich Lambo drivers have optimal results in their residences 😉.
Frankly I would expect that as part of the service when you buy speakers in that price range and certainly would NOT pay a penny extra for set up.
For example I know that if you were to buy large Quested Audio HM415 (active main monitors for about US$ 70k) Roger Quested himself comes to help set them up regardless of where you are in the world at no extra cost.
But then you always tend to get better support if you buy professional gear.
After all their customers depend on the gear for their livelihood and at that price level bad service is as damaging to the manufacturer as faulty products.
I also strongly suspect that HM415 sound better than Avantgardes considering that the typical customer can easily compare what comes out of the speaker to the real, live instrument which is usually just in the room next door.
tannoy dreadnoughts XO6000 cross overs
Thanks for reading my posting. Kind Regards, simon
I also own a set Tannoy Dreadnoughts with these XO6000 cross overs, but sadly, the cross overs are not working right. Are there any schematics available? I allready contacted Tannoy but they could not help me out (too old stuff they said). Is there someone out there who can help me out? I would be very greatfull for any help.

Oh yes. Simon, if they are active move to the amps section (of the forum). If they are passives make a new thread here with all specs and problems.😉I also own a set Tannoy Dreadnoughts with these XO6000 cross overs, but sadly, the cross overs are not working right. Which ones should I have kept...
I can't relate to the what if high end fantasy. So I'll just vote with Pano. I shoulda kept the Altecs, even though they were the baby 800 hz version. So mellow, like a best friend just in the room with me. They were even green. Dang me!

I would purchase, but probably not listen to -- the Acoustic Research LST's OR the JBL Centuries -- I don't know where I would put them.
Got a very tempting offer on a set of these Atlantis| audioconnection Australia but don't have the 30k-50k to buy the supporting hardware. So they would be the ones that I would buy, but these are the ones I would like http://www.higherfi.com/spkrlist/jmlabs_grand_utopia_EM.jpg but at 180k it won't be happening this life time...
We recently thoroughly overhauled a pair of AR3a's. Not exactly DIY but we went after caps, crossovers, binding posts and most happily a replacement of the two dreaded rear side pots.
We found an article by Mr. Allison outlining what the appropriate circuit would be. Then two 6x6 pc boards and presto.
Not sure if there's much love for 3a's here but the results were stunning. and it's led to a very interesting comparison of the McIntosh MC2200 and two monoblocked Hafler DH200's which I am learning much about mods for from this forum.

Love for 3a's
First great speaker I ever heard. Enough clean power and it's music time. On the short list.
Actually today I found a working pair of AR-4x, which was my first speaker buy many many moons ago, for 5 bucks. Now for Speakerdave's x/o and a Dyna SCA-35, which I have a lead on. Nostalgia! Meanwhile the 4s are relieving my ears of the screech put out by my Polk Monitor 10 shop speakers.
