What is wrong with op-amps?

I understand the differences CofG has on a glider, fret height on a string, tension on a bow , grinding angle on a knife and types of drag on a multiplier. The difference between 750V /uS and 1000V /uS escapes me.

The difference between 750 V/us and 1000 V/us is like the difference between putting tires rated to 150 MPH or 160 MPH on your car. Neither option will have any bearing on your commute to work at 60 MPH and other variables will be the limiting factors on how fast you drive.

Similarly, if you put 25 MPH rated tires on your car, they would definitely affect the driving experience.

There are MANY good op amps for audio applications from many different manufacturers. Which one is right depends on the particular application.

I hope no-one creates a class D valve amplifier. Try arguing that one. Zero idle power. Harmonic distortion so low my cat and the local dolphinarium can't hear it. Heats the home for free in winter. Only needs heaters replacing every 200 hours and the glass tubes have special recycling needs for the heavy metals in the construction.

I like a black silicon blob with gain for peanuts.

I understand that. The standard deviation of what will achieve the top 99% for audio use seems pretty wide these days. We're at the top of the curve. Several devices will do?

OMG. You mean there's no such thing as "The Best" opamp? All the numerology, the listening tests, the opamp rolling, the exotic circuits, components and materials, and there's none of them that could be declared "The Best"? Do you realize how much grief you're causing?

I've had that conversation at more audio customers then I care to admit...

Add bond wire and bondpad composition to the list of suspects for affecting audio performance 🙄

Very tiny pieces of wire. Usually bonded ultrasonically. There are quality issues and the bond is like any other mechanical process, variable.

A good bond uses 50% of the wire to be flat. Squished, just marked, or off-centre isn't good enough.

In 2016, ultrasonic wire bonding is (black blob with gain) not worth worrying about. It's perfect.

We had an inside joke at TI that we should add a parameter called "The Best" to the online op amp selection matrix. For the discerning customer who doesn't have time to narrow down parts by supply voltage, bandwidth, offset voltage, etc. and only wants the best.

Obviously, clicking it would return THE BEST OP AMP!!!

Warning: The "best op amp" coincidentally may also be our most expensive one.

Tee hee. Maybe an exclusive line of audio ones in gold plated metal cans @ $200 each could do the trick. Mil rated and everything. In three grades A, B, C with A commanding a premium of $100.

Yeah! Maybe I'll do it with op amps using technology from 30 years ago too and sell it at a HUGE premiums that I justify by over-the-top audio marketing!!! Wait, someone already does that...
