I think that the notion that frequency response should be flat may be correct at the macro level. But in reality stereo system consists of errors that that needs some compensation eg to get a neutral phantom centre. I don’t think Toole speaks of this in terms of fidelity although he refers to those studies.
To ICG ( and anyone who might think with malice )
Here is a truck full of...
I've seen extremely good drivers with very, very low distortion. Not even manufacturers claim their speakers are distortion free. But since you are the only enlightened person in the whole world who knows it all, please, grace us with just a fraction of your immense wisdom and knowledge and name just ONE driver without distortion.
The answer to a thread title
It is the magnificent loss of its value expressed in the usual currency.

The worst feature of a loudspeaker is its efficiency which usually just a couple of percent. 100 watts in and 2 watts out.

We appreciate constructive criticism both positive and negative and most of all we appreciate respect among fellow members.
Up to you guys how long this raft stays afloat.
If the OP wants to talk about distortion, I was getting at cone motion needing to be kept at a minimum
What is the target application?
Room?
Support kit?
(particularily the amp, since amp. speaker, connection should alsways be considered a system)
Who is the target listener?
What compromises do they find the least tolerable? The least objectionable?
That’s a start.

It seems like most responses don't like the OP's question so are offering up other advice, answering a different question of their own liking, or asking questions instead of answering.
I haven't finished my first design so don't know the answer, but a reasonable answer to the OPs question would be:
Highly uneven response in the 2Khz to 5khz range;
or
Drivers significantly out of phase at the crossover point.

Yes, this is on topic. Don't you have a question on distortion from just a few days back that you should go and answer?I've seen extremely good drivers with very, very low distortion. Wrong😱 - System starts ( or ends) from the pick up...errr...(as many among here are digital or HD) from bitstream- the sourceSupport kit?
(particularily the amp, since amp. speaker, connection should always be considered a system)
ME 🙄 ( as dIy is for yourself 😉 )Who is the target listener?
Distortion! What else? What compromises do they find the least tolerable? The least objectionable?
Target>go guess
Room> the perfect room
The perfect speaker in the perfect room with the best cables connecting to and from the source and amps, both perfect (infinite slew rate, bandwidth, etc don't bring ME into NFB 😛 let's say perfect retro-FB controlled devices).

Not really. Moving on, read Linkwitz about illusionRead it, twice. Good book. Tells you that two ears and a brain work wonders to fix almost whatever fault there is in the speakers and the room.
But why not make the illusion a bit better?

Again>go guess...
Hint: target>go guess
What is in the speakers and the room?
We use to call it sound, microphones, on the other way, pick up a portion of the original emission- the waves that excite the diaphragm i.e. pressure waves
No fear of two ways?
😱
Admit: I feel safe 'cos I'm on the right side (monospeaker
)
But widebanders are
Soooo 😎
How big the woofer ?
Have you heard about ...boomer ?( Audax used to name it so, right?🙄)

- I'm not obliged to answer all and every posts.
- I'm not spending constantly the same ammount of time in the forum. I've had phases in which I write a lot and then there are times I am hardly on here or reading the forum at all.
- I try to answer all questions I'm asked. If you want me to answer to a certain post, PM/reply me but please provide information and a link to the thread/post.
- If someone else already answered a question directed to me, I don't find it often useful to just repeat the same.
- Don't you want to elaborate your answer on how you rise the spl of a passive speaker by changing the crossover in this thread since you're still claiming it's possible?
Ugly. Speakers should eliminate ugly. I’m talking about visually mainly, but sonically too. Beauty matters.
