Dave Mackay, who flew today, is Virgin Galactic's chief pilot.
He grew up in the small village of Helmsdale in the north of Scotland.
As a child, he was inspired to become a pilot through watching Buccaneers from RNAS Lossiemouth (now RAF Lossiemouth) performing high speed, low altitude manoeuvres above the village.
After his first flight into space in 2019, he returned to Helmsdale to share his experience with the local school children.
Accompanying him into space on that first flight was the Ladybird hardback, called Exploring Space, which he'd been awarded for his good attendance at Sunday school in Helmsdale in 1964.

Whole thing looks safe enough. Though the Virgin pilots appear to be ancient and liable to croak mid-orbit. Which is a worry.
Virgin Galactica are currently charging about $250,000 for 90 minutes of sub-orbital spaceflight on advance bookings. They hope to get this down to $30,000. But have actually upped it to $500,000 due to lack of current interest in Sea Cruises. You get a free space-suit.
Jeff Bezos of Amazon is currently charging $22M for a higher flight. You get to sit next to Jeff Bezos. The whole thing is computer controlled, and much more environmentally friendly since the rocket exhaust is water.
SpaceX is charging $55M for a higher flight altogether. Not sure if you sit with Elon Musk of Tesla. Not sure where it goes either.
Looks like I'll have to slum it with Virgin. Famous for cheap flights. 😀

The thought of sitting next to any of those three is enough to make me spend the money on a yacht and go sailing instead.
If you don't need to see the curvature of the Earth (or what little you might see at 55 or 62 miles up), there's the airplane thing, 30-seconds at a time of zero gee on a plane flying parabolas, 10 x 30 seconds, about 5 minutes total, and for only about $6,000.

That was interesting. An invasive plant from Russia! Arrived about 200 years ago.
I found the bit about cherries designed to be eaten by birds for seed dispersal interesting too. My neighbour gets annoyed to bits when the birds eat all his cherries just before they are ready. Even (cruelly, IMO) fires a catapult at them. In return, because birds can recognise people, they have singled out his car in the street and poo on it relentlessly. 🙂
Another old neighbour used to fume when the blackbird ate all his grapes too.
"Look at that bird! It's so heavy with my grapes it can hardly take off!"
Isn't nature wonderful!

Tumbleweeds were mentioned on the radio during the Euro football final. When Italy equalised, and everybody was thinking "Oh No, PENALTIES!", the commentator remarked:
"It's gone so quiet at Wembley, you could hear a tumbleweed roll!"
