What is limiting 1" compression drivers from playing <1kHz at "low" volume

A few years back and "somewhere", maybe the Altec forum, someone posted a nice picture of a 1" CD on a very long horn. Maybe 4 feet long or more. He said that it played down low just fine. From my experience with big horns and also from fiddling around with HornResp, length does seem to be key.

Right, it's a function of throat area, so with a 1" which starts out at > 4 kHz min. it takes a very long, slow expanding horn to go low with 'authority'.

Don't recall, but W.E. had a 6 ft long stage monitor horn for the 555 1" driver. There use to be a picture on line of Judy Garland speaking through one [no driver] doing a vocal test, but can't remember exactly what at this point and no longer have the link 🙁:

EarlK, I am curious about your use of the XT1464 and a 1" driver... is there merit to this? I have a plethora of CDX1-1745 and a pair of the XT1464. I had considered using either 3D printed or those Eminence adapters. <<<SNIP>>>

Merit?? You could simply buy a pair of those Eminence ( HA1-14 ) adapters and form your own opinions.

Yes, the XT1464 ( being a longer ) horn extends lower than the 152i clone ( though as I showed above > the limiting factor for achieving lower usable extension will also be any drivers Fs // suspension ).

Anecdotally, I sent an LHF alumnus a pair of my Peerless DFM2535 drivers ( as well as a pair of Celestion CDX1-1747 drivers ) along with the necessary capacitors to allow for "apples to apples" comparisons when mounted to an Altec 811b horn ( & used in the owners mostly stock Altec 846B Valencias ).

He didn't like the Celestions ( at all ) while the smaller Peerless driver acquitted itself very well in a direct comparison to his GPA 902-8a ( that this user had upgraded to from the hapless Altec 806 ).
- He ended up concluding the little Peerless was a worthy upgrade ( especially for the low monies it sells for ) if a user can't afford GPA's pricing regime.

His Valencias used the N800K crossover ( BTW ).
