THX levels
This is a quote from the thx.com site:
----------------
"What is Reference Level?
Manufacturing receivers and speakers that can achieve THX Reference Level is no simple task. It requires a tremendous amount of power to drive an audio system effortlessly without clipping or distorting. To ensure the audio products can reach this peak performance, THX developed a set of standards as part of its THX Ultra2, THX Select2 and I/S Plus certifications.
Experience Studio Clarity: THX Certified Receivers reproduce studio Reference Level, 85dB SPL with 20dB of headroom.
Reference Level for your Room: THX Ultra2 Plus, THX Select2 Plus and THX I/S Plus certification categories deliver Reference Level performance in your specific room size.
Distortion-free Playback: THX Certified Receivers and speakers are designed to recreate Reference Level with minimal distortion."
------------------
Apparently receivers reproduce studio reference levels. Anyway, it seems that there is no such thing as one specific THX reference level, and frequency does not enter into it? Sell, baby, sell.
Regards,

Regards,
The 'sell' part is just a byproduct of the varying needs of the app. I mean you don't normally want the full on studio reference for your small multiple cineplex theaters and certainly not your computer and/or apt. or condo system since none of these can normally tolerate the high SPLs and ultra-low LF output. For smaller systems, the various THX requirements were mostly about frequency and polar response when I was active in such things.

So, bose do not archieve more low end nor more max SPL with their subs than a TH driven by the above mentioned 5inch "woofers"?
...but wouldn't building a sub with my cheapo drivers then be worth a try or just waste of time?
Not AFAIK with their consumer systems, though their prosound systems are somewhat more expensive/powerful.
If you don't mind the cost of materials and your labor to make a multiple driver one such as Oliver suggested with the understanding that's not going to play all that loud for its size, I see no reason why not. This is what DIY is all about for me, trying different things just because I can.
