Hi @diyiggy! On Q1, NOS vs OS it rather depends, generally I'll go for NOS as I mostly tend to use an LC filter afterwards. But it does rather depend on the DAC chip being used. I figure TDA1387 and TDA1545 have relatively high ultrasonic output - by this I don't mean image frequencies, rather ultrasonic noise due to glitching so these chips benefit from LC filtering. Whereas recently I've been listening to AD768 and found that its sound is less affected by an LC reconstruction filter. Its my hypothesis that its less 'glitchy'. But its very early days with that chip, take my observations with a substantial pinch of salt. Q2 - definitely I prefer passive post-filtering.
My 2 cents Abraxalito, been mucking around with nos 1514 for a number of years. In the early days I too tried some passive sallen & keys
network on other dacs but I guess type of components used also affected SQ somewhat. Now on my Tda, I dont use any LC filters anymore,
instead I use a 600-600 ohm line out opt which brings up the SQ to another level. In ways the opt acts as a gentle filter network which works
well on my set up.
Cheers

The DAC I used to participate in the tests of this thread was really revealing mostly because it allowed to compare apples to apples for the first time. A/B tests of NOS/OS coming out of the same chip working under the same operating points actually demystified the whole thing to my eyes. I had to put a lot of effort to spot the difference that I was thinking to be clearly distinct from comparing different DACs. Eventually, I came up with three output options: OS, raw unfiltered NOS and NOS with post DAC passive filter, in particular @abraxalito 's Chelibidache. And a brief description of my listening perception. OS is very clear and transparent, the accurate sound. I could only tell it is lifeless when I listen to NOS. Then it leaves something to be desired. NOS on the other hand, is vivid and dynamic but it struggles with details. The passive filter somehow bridges those two worlds. It steals just a bit of the NOS dynamics but pays off with restored transparency. It was said earlier in this discussion that the length of the reconstruction filter determines its quality and I was thinking that an analog filter should be long enough after all.
@abraxalito
Several times your Chelibidache design was mentioned.
Trying to search this name on DiyAudii was unsuccessful.
Therefore, could you give us some details.

I find having sinc droop correction increase dinamics, and that boosted high end brings out what i perceive as more detailed sound. But it does takes it's toll (not that much though) a bit on sound stage, and what is usually described as vivid. Honestly, best to have is a switch, and listen to what feels good at that particular moment 🙂The passive filter somehow bridges those two worlds. Hi @Hans Polak - the DAC is named after the Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache. It has an array of 20 TDA1387s to get a low noise floor, also a 9th order LC reconstruction filter is used prior to the I/V stage. That is active, using an LT1028 with a discrete SE buffer output to maintain PSU cleanliness. The Vendor's Bazaar thread is here. The tech thread which gave birth to the design is this one.
That's what I did 🙂Honestly, best to have is a switch, and listen to what feels good at that particular moment 🙂

<<Hello Brijac!
I just have this configuration, very high resolution AKM Delta Sigma Shanling converter configuration and on the other hand NOS converter on R2R Denafrips Pontus.
I can choose either technology with an XLR selector.
indeed the Delta Sigma is more analytical, everything passes, everything is clean!
the R2R is on the other hand less demonstrative, I would say that we are closer to listening to vinyl recording style from the 70s and analog reel-to-reel master tapes.
for me it has its effect, it's a pleasure to listen to music with a good association.
good listening!>>
excuse me ?

Don't worry, with AI, in less than 2 years you will be able to write in your own language and it will be translated almost perfectly on the fly directly in every forums !
????
There were non insulting posts Mooly. I was saying gently to this country fellow it was an english forum in our common language and the modalities on how it was translated in his browser and he answerered he used a tool to write from french to english ! He gently then retranslated his post in english.
I dunno if he understood I was saying this to him in french as the translating function of his browser seems to be automaticly turned on ! 😉
I don't see any bad exchange from both of us in that fast and short exchange and I was friendly as I know the difficulty of some to speak your language.
I think you missunderstood something as you posted 'Offending, etc...". It was already over when you poped up, maybe you was alerted by an intolerant member ?
Cheers

I think "offending" simply means "breaking the rule" here.
No matter how polite they were, there were several posts in French that all broke the rule that posts in another language than English should contain a translation in English.

I think you miss the point Marcel. But thanks, I hadn't understood "offending" in that sense you highligth. Thanks for that.
The guy was lost in translation and with the tools. To be welcoming I invinted him to swap to english and understood it was a tool thing problem. So I said it in french if it is clearer for you (for him to understand).
You must understand as a guy from Netherlands than some country don't rule the subtilities of english language like you in your country where the level is pretty high if not one of the best in Europe with Norway perhaps. A same word in english can have different meanings related to the situation, not in my mother language which is very precise (like german btw)
In my country and education the post of Mooly is very rude, and suggested a form of barbary from the people involved in the sense of offending as we understood this word in french. Absolutly dry, which by the way is not in his personality.
It was not usefull to translate this very short exchange as it was just related to this problem wrote in french for him to understand. There was nothing related to audio and surely not a bad attitude to exclude another people or to be unfriendly with them ! At the opposite it was friendly to a new comer to be softly sugested in a language he understand to post only in english here.
(in my mother language the word offosant, which the english one is comming from, seems less rude than in english at reading you and doesn't mean "irespectfull of somewhat... but more of someone" here the rules as you wrote, which a non native or people not having living in an english speaking country can automaticly understand).
Offending is a less agressive word for insulting in french. (to be very short)
I think you're rigth but the way you remember this to me lack to me of gentleman attitude (as being dry by saying "it is what is is" = no matter). Which of course you are not (a non gentleman, rigth the opposite actually). So no it is not "It is what it is" to be an acceptable thing I can read adressed to me, sorry; as behind there is absolutly no offense to anyone in what I & Him said, and somewhere the furthest mod reminder was adressed before by me but way more softly. Maybe an anthropological difference, I don't know.
Hum we are lost in NOS talking ! Even if you are rigth, I think your reaction and the one of Mooly were ruder at knowing this forum where such a things happens time to time without bad intention. We are not bad people and not as stupid it is suggested, but were highligthed (so twice with you) as such finally... quite offending (my education at least).
Cheers Marcel, I love you, seems to be a two cents OS/non-OS language thing without importance. After all a member (who will recognized himself) of this page said to me I was illiterate, it breaked not the rule, but just has a peasant education in my standards.
I am not a machine, I breaked the rule twice here by being off topic, I appologize for that. Just needed to make understand than some reaction sometimes are more offending than the rules they serve. Think to it twice : it was short and everywhere in this forum people use french expression in their english phrases without it becomes a diplomatic crisis ! 🙂
For this not being a sterile exchange, I suggest to mods to have perhaps a bad cops and a good cops emoticon to avoid such missundertances, maybe. For an english a cop is not rude and is polite, for an american for instance, cop intrusion is more stressfull as a 2 cents illustration.

good evening DIY
are you french?
I understood exactly like you!
I was in doubt when the moderator told me that I had offended (insulted) all or part of the community with my language, and that for this reason my messages were purely and simply deleted.
hope we can find a consensus?
have a good evening everyone!

An offense in this case is simply a violation of forum rules. The rules say it is an English language forum, so if you post in another language then you have to post an English translation with it. That's all. The rules can be found at: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/help/terms/
Mines were deleted too. Yes I am. I think simply people didn't understood what happen.
Back to the thread subject now, I have explained this to tame down the things, you, I, haven't understood Mooly reaction as he hasn't understood ours. It migth happens (emoticons can help). Mooly is a very nice people, so I don't think, I am sure, it was NOT to hurt you, but this is is also how I lived it.
But sometimes there are missunderstandings, someone can alert the mods with the report option, etc. Different people different personalities, cultures.
Mark, yup I understood what Marcel said. But I certainly not alert a mod if you use french expression in your phrases: that is my point. Rules are here to serve people not the opposit. This is what i just tried to explain. I think it is just cultural sligth differences.
Let's forget that and go back to the topic. Sorry for the noise, it was just needing a reconstruction filter here ! 😊
