what class-D amps can run off of +/-90VDC rails?

I have the luck of recently purchasing some beefy transformers that can be used in a linear power supply which will result in rail voltages of +/-89VDC. I'm looking for candidates for these amp boards, which I plan to use the amps 8-ohm subwoofers. Unfortunately, this is above the recommended rail range for most of the class-D amps that I have seen. I'd prefer class-D because power dissipation in class AB is going to be too much for my application.

So far I have identified ONE viable candidate: The ColdAmp Sonora S750:

This amp is spec'd to run on rail as high as +/-94VDC, so I have a couple of volts to spare. This amp can produce about 400W into 8 ohms, which would work well for me.

Any other class-D amp boards out there that will work? Any thoughts on these new Sonora products from ColdAmp?

I keep us informed. I have an amp chassis and transformer from a dead class-D amp that has about the same voltage rails! I need a new design to put in the chassis!

Watch out for supply pumping using half-bridge modules.

UcD700HG and UcD2K are also suitable for that supply voltage.

If those are outside your budget, I know an IRS2092 board can be designed to handle high rails, but can't point you to any specific modules for sale.

After checking out the Connexelectronics units, I think that this would be pushing them too close to the limit.

So, any other options?

What is your suggestion for this "DIY Class-D amp"? I can design PCBs but I don't really want to spend the effort to do that for only a couple of units. I'm looking for off-the-shelf amp modules that I can power. Thanks

Hi Neil,

I read the datasheet and it seems it's just a driver IC/board and you need to have a handful of additional components (like the output stage) to create an amplifier... is that correct? If so, I am looking for something that is a little more plug and play...

Yep. Just seeing if you had any interest. I bought two of them many years ago along with some suitable transformers, but lost interest. There are probably better ways to use plus and minus 90V 🙂

I think I paid around $180 for mine 5 years ago. Still sitting here in a RB-TDA2500 board; never put it to use.

Bringing this thread up again, in case some new stuff is out there...

I am currently thinking of buying a couple of these amp boards:

They are available as of now, but I'm currently waiting to see if the designer will build one and post some testing results of THD, noise floor, etc.

Is there currently anything else out there that is class-D and runs (safely) off of +/-85-90V rails?
