Use of WE 300B tubes make sense with high quality outputs transformers.
This two blogs can bring you some answers and inspire ideas
Thanks for those links. There's a lot to read there.
I am glad to see they are coming down on their prices, but they need to up production to get the price down to about half that beforeI will be willing to buy them.

If Western Electric have the common sense to drop the price to that of the cheapest clones, then they will monopolise and clear up the entire 300b market overnight.
Sadly, Is suspect the total sales won't justify this, as there aren't enough "students" to make up the numbers anyway. Anyone who reads a site like this will realise there are plenty of cheaper, equally linear output valves out there which are just as easy or easier to work with than a 300b.
kind regards
Marek

I've used JJs, Liuzhous and Golden Dragon. Believe it or not, the JJs, which are more expensive, sounded the least pleasing, to my ear anyway. Maybe it's not so much about linearity.
The 100nF coupling cap is overrated, so it has either a 600V or 630V rating, and is a modern material cap; Not a paper cap, etc.
I think this is OK, wouldn't you agree?

The question I was answering about whether the poster's circuit was OK . . .
I said:
"I trust it if:" First statement.
And then I said "The 100nF coupling cap is overrated, so it has either a 600V or 630V rating, and is a modern material cap; Not a paper cap, etc." Second statement.
You copied my second statement, without copying the first statement.
That changes the meaning completely.
I just wanted to clear that up.

Stupidly overpriced. Any amp I had using them would be reduced to components in my spare parts bins.
goddlediddles,
It is OK.
Keep up the good posts.
Keep designing, keep building, and keep enjoying listening.
Just my hopes.
I get my JJ tubes at eurotubes.com
A matched pair of 300B is $280. I drive over and pick them up.
The Gold Lion 300B from The Tube-store is $160 each, and that is $320 unmatched.
I am fortunate.

I have a pair of Psvane HiFi 300B, and a Pair of EH 300B Gold. So far I can measure a very slight difference, but can not hear any difference. Maybe just my bad hearing.
A quick update on the off chance that someone finds this info useful. One of my WE 300B 2021 reissue tubes is intermittently noisy. Both tubes made some strange sounds beyond the usual warm-up pings and pongs for the first hours of use. After 100+hours, one tube is noiseless, but the other tube is randomly noisy. I have swapped the tubes numerous times and the noise follows the tube. Sometimes it hums, and other times it makes a crinkling sound (a bit like crumpling a mylar bag) or the sound of radio static between stations. For a week it also made an intermittent "whining" sound - but I haven't heard that in the last few days. I've informed Western Electric and they've given me an RMA number. So I'll be returning the noisy tube for inspection next week. I am hoping WE can get this sorted quickly because I otherwise really like the tubes.
cheers, Derek
A final follow-up about this. I never ended up returning the tube to WE b/c the noise issues continued to diminish with use. After a recent additional 50 hrs in my 300B power amp (previously used them in my 300B preamp), there is no discernable noise. Swapping them back into the 300B preamp, I can hear the slightest, occasional hum. Whereas both my EML and JJ 300Bs are silent in the preamp. So I will stick with the EMLs in the preamp and use the WE in the power amp.
Speculation: If plate dissipation has a major part to play in tube "burn in", then my previous 100s of hours of using them in my preamp may not have accomplished much "burn in". The preamp runs 300B tubes very gently -- I forget the exact plate voltage, but IIRC it's around 175V or so, maybe even as low as 150V (with cascode CCS as plate load). If anyone with knowledge/experience can share some insight about the role of plate dissipation or plate voltage in new stock tube burn in (or other determining factors), I'd appreciate it.
FWIW, as before, I am very happy with the sound of the WE tubes.
cheers, Derek

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Money is transferred from one pocket to another pocket when Boutique 'takes over'.
As long as one has money, he or she can use it.

The WE 300 is one of the very few tubes designed for nice audio. So it is of interest here. What are the purpose of these posts?
It went out of production. And came back. And stopped. And started again.
It was always expensive, though when the cost could be spread over thousands of movie-theater customers it was acceptable. Is the cost inevitable to making a nice tube? Or just a greedy factory? I think the price may be fair, though I can only stand by and drool.
