ways to lightly stiffen a paper cone(varnish etc)

I'm ignorant - is there another term for "pure white" shellac? -some searches bring up opaque white stuff

I wonder if a de-whizzered BG20 would benefit from having an inner diameter say 1.25"->1.5" treated with airplane dope - ? - be a gamble

this looks like enough to ruin many speakers
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
Could kill millions of brain cells if not properly ventilated. Not stiff, very flexible coating.

Minwax Polycrylic is a bit thin, but works well. Have used to apply 0.5-0.7oz/yd glass cloth to foam wings cores and fuselage. Sometimes apply various coatings with an airbrush. Masking and stenciling where needed. Interested in surface treatment only, eg thin film coatings

Glitter hairspray is available at Spencers and Party City :p

Non stiff coating will damp or eve ruin the driver.

Shellac gives a hard coating, which will/should improve slightly dead cones. Paper cones only!!.

White shellac must be in Crystal form...not a paint makers bottle for furniture!

Artists materials specialist firms such as Cornelliasen (Check spelling on google) sell only the finest. Ask them re. a liquid to thin. It's turps but I cant remember whether raw or distilled. Again finest artists quality please.

I think it probably is bleached shellac.

Shellac comes in several different grades. Blonde, bleached, ruby, orange, lemon, dewaxed, decolorized by activated coal, buttonlac, seedlac, sticklac, to name a few.

thats interesting. I'll mix a powder into the shellac and hopefully it will dissipate and still be ok to spray. Do those little hand held artist sprays work ok?

Depends on how thick it is, how much air pressure is required and how much pattern control you desire. I have accumulated a box full of various brand, model airbrushes to paint everything from pencil thin lines with the finest inks at very low pressure to detailing motorcycle helmets/whatever with automotive paints, but for base coatings where pattern control isn't a high priority, a relatively dirt cheap Badger kit is sufficient for most paints if enough air cfm, psi is available, so a lot depends on the air supply. If using a larger touch up gun, then spraying through a template is advised.

Looks like Troels may have found a simpler way to deal with smoothing response, using glue at the inner edge of the surround, as explained in his latest piece...

By adding a proper amount of glue with proper elasticity and resilience* and in the right place on the inner side of the surround, the energy coming from the cone can better be absorbed and the result is a more linear frequency response - and hopefully, more fidelity.

*The source of material and application technique shall not be revealed, so please do not ask.

Yeah, probably to fend off knuckleheads who damage their drivers (and then blame him for it).....I suppose if you are motivated and "smart" enough you can figure it out/experiment for yourself, but doesn't really save you any time.

Hi Freedom666

was your blog with the gold foil version an Eminence Beta12cx ? -

I like the idea of foam weatherstripping applied to a driver's surround

Would something like what's called Aileen's Tacky Glue be more favorable
for foil than Elmers white glue?

Is thin foil preferable to heavy kitchen foil ?
