ways to lightly stiffen a paper cone(varnish etc)

Stiffening the cone

Hi,

I'd go to a model shop and use whatever doping . . .

A friend and I use model dope (Balsa wood) to slightly stiffen a paper cone SEAS 10" woofer. Worked like a charm. Maybe with some carbon-fibre this will add extra stiffness, but test it out on a piece of paper first. Best applied with an air-brush. The free air resonance dropped from 27 Hz to 23 Hz (tested by friend in an anechoic chamber at a test institute.) The driver was tested against one that wasn't doped in a custom built sub-woofer. There was a slight but noticeable improvement in the low bass response.

Dope is used to protect the balsa wood from moisture and the oils used in the engine fuel.

P.S. However this was back in the mid 80's. There are probably better and lighter stiffeners available now
