Not if you use 50 of them (lol) I paid the price of 2 of the top drivers for a box full of series production drivers and do not regret that decision. If would have to do the same build for a potential buyer I'd have to charge big though, for the attention for detail I spend on the box design, damping etc.
ScanSpeak 10F and Visaton B80 is far expensive and far better than TC9..
In this case price is absolutely guarantee of performance..
Believe it or not. The TC9 was cleaner in distortion plots at 95 dB than the 10F at same drive level from 250 Hz and above 😱. Pretty amazing right?
Look it up in Klang und Ton test of 19 full range speakers February 2010.
The 10F did win in the waterfall plots. I'd love to see similar data on the Visaton B80.(*)
By the way, in distortion it (the TC9) also beat the Audience A3, 3" driver with 12 mm xmax, costing even more than the Scanspeak.
That driver (Audience A3) had the best waterfall of all the tiny drivers though.
(*) just found some data plots from that one:

Here's the TC9, still not embarrassed by the Visaton...
I like the off axis performance of the cheap driver better and the distortion as well. Waterfall is a close call.
Not noticing the enormous quality difference you spoke of though.

I don't think price always means better. Better engineering wins the day regardless of price or materials. An $11 driver can certainly sound better than a $111 driver. The opposite is also true.
Finding bargains is part of DIY. Measurements help us find bargains. I appreciate this thread and the good that's come from it.
Subjective results are also important and why different manufactures have their fans. As long as these products are engineered to similar standards and designed for serious listening I can appreciate them. The market will shake out the good from the bad.
There is no best so find your point of diminishing returns is and enjoy the music.

am I seeing it correctly that K3 at 95dB was better than 40dB down to 300Hz for the little Vifa?
Slightly even better in lower frequencies..Here's the TC9, still not embarrassed by the Visaton..
In middle and high Visaton has less distortion.. also smoother frequency response..

Did you notice the rise of K2 below 500 HZ at 95 dB drive levels in the Visaton compared to the same range in the TC9?
I would consider the Scanspeak the better driver on paper. For me the TC9 does more things right than the Visaton judging these graphs.
Not only looking at distortion here. You've got to admit though that crazy cheap Vifa does very well on paper. Disproving your original statement about more expensive drivers being better.
However, we could go on and on here... There's no harm in liking one driver better than another for whatever reason.
That's why I like the Vifa, as it had everything I looked for and was cheap enough for me to buy larger quantities.
I might be over defensive because I own them. But I'm not stating they are the best but they do sum up for the title of this thread i.m.h.o.

Measurement for Vifa and ScanSpeak are not identical compared to those for Visaton.. first two have distorsion in dB, last one in percentage.. when calculated 10F and B80 are very close, TC9 slightly worse..
I'll stop trying here, enough is posted for anyone to make up his/her own mind.
I've stated mine, you've stated yours...
I know what I picked and why, you made your own very different choices.
I'm very pleased with my choice, hopefully you are happy too, no harm done.
No crossovers were used in the enjoyment of my speakers, all drivers operate as full range that's why the build thread is in the Full Range sector. Did you go multi way or Fast?

Behold, mercenaries..he's gathering info by using troll tactics...
So you do rely on off axis performance. Why not step up to the better Scanspeak?
It's better in waterfall and off axis performance. The price difference is small, you said so yourself 😉.
Nice graphs, I'm sure you've seen mine somewhere...

Because it's easier to do whole project in the Boxsim simulation..Why not step up to the better Scanspeak?
There must be more expensive tools available for you to do a good job with the Scanspeak though...
See how this never ends? Well it could end right now, your choice.

I did not realize the 10F is better than B80 on paper. Glad I have them - now have to figure a box worthy of them. It seems like a nice FAST is way to go or maybe use them to drive my Trynergies ? Less breakups on high.
It seems to me there is no difference..I did not realize the 10F is better than B80 on paper..
I'm waiting for your measurements..
