Played the amp all day Sunday --- Baroque to Marley favorites played many times
and I started to notice nice bits of percussion in Marley....point being a lot like the
detail and location in the sound stage..... reminds me the 2A3! and a bit more 'dynamic' or just more power.
Thanks to all that helped!

HEY guys

Haven't looked at this thread in a LONG while and didn't realize the followups. Okie - glad you succeeded in getting the amp going.

Regarding HUM. Yep it can/does depending on how well the tubes in each channel are balanced. Otherwise, there is nothing special about the way the tubes are hooked up. I found that with, say 5 new Sovtek's, I could, by swapping them around achieve a hum level so low that I'd have to put my ear right up against the speaker to hear anything.

Actually a few months ago, after 20 years of ownership, one of my buddies who bought one was selling, and I bought it back. Was still using the original Sylvania's! Did have some hum so I played with the tubes as mentioned above. Interestingly enough, found that the with some combinations, the frequency of the hum could change from 60 to 120hz. Stopped playing around after settling for the quietest combination.

And when you get it "right" - just STOP and ENJOY !!!!!

My tech friend built a pair of 6B4G mono's ( Pete Millett circuit) that I got to listen too this weekend at a friends audio room..... it was a great afternoon but
mostly social and was hard to get a serious listen .....Bob did get matched pairs from Brent Jesse but with 6 others in the room socializing a hard listen was impossible..... this does not get me off the issue as I need to dig into the couch for change and get 2 pairs matched.......
I wanted Bob to build a 6B4G SET (6-8 watts) but he made monos... and Pete knows his stuff....
I did pick up another 6B4G (6SN7 drivers) with monster UTC OPT's
I get silly thinking a pair of ESL 63's would love a pair of 6b4G mono's......... see how this happens!!???

Stella, Has taken a while for my thoughts to collect.... recently reading about the vacuum tube 6as7g used in OTL amps by Atm Sphere amps.... and in their resource pages some interesting history about the tube family that 2A3 and 6B4G are all in..... seems like everyone likes all these tubes -- then I find another page about Single ended and push pull amps are different and how PP will never have the detail and ' presence' a SE amp has..... seems like a lot of builders want the band width and power over the SE ..... it dawns on me that to get the 6B4G to perform up to the same level as a 2A3 it needs to be run in a single ended amp......Last evening I was playing the "King" 6B4G amp, moreplay preamp, into my Caladan OB's ( knockoffs) Leon Redbone's Strings & Jokes, cut of 'My Walkin' Stick".......inky black quiet, crisp, clean, details with a tight bass.... It reminded me of my 2A3 I sold many moons ago...........
The light bulb lite up!!! I want this tube in a Single Ended amp -- 5-6 watts is just fine with me!
I have read up on the Ralph Powers amp ? any other ideas? suggestions?
Have no issues with the King amp at all! would like to get it updated with a power cord and a new power switch.... but not much else.... it's not going anywhere either.....
