I haven't tried other caps with this kit yet. If you search the digital forum, there are a lot of comments on this.
WIMA FKPs are very very large. I don't thinh it can fit. MKP10 may fit.

it's weird the dac will some times just work and some times ill be listening it for like a huor and then it will sound like the cd is skipping and then turn off.. i have tried removing the cap also.
Wima FKP-2 0.1uF/63V are the exact same size as the supplied ERO MKP, they'll fit.
From a search, Thomas says refresh rate of fkp is lower than mkp.. but everywhere else says they are better sounding for 1541a decoupling. So, does refresh rate count for anything?
Jleaman... when you remove the input xfmr, you must add a wire link and a 0.1u cap. Holding the PCB with the power supply caps/heatsink near, and the signal output connectors furthest away, the wire link goes across the right hand side where the input xfmr was, and the cap across the left hand side.

FKP sounds definitely better than MKP in critical places e.g. in the signal path. However I am not sure if they would make a different as coupling caps.
It is most likely that FKP will be at least equal MKPs with the same voltage rating. However some people say that voltage rating also make some differences. Your FKPs have lower voltage rating so it's quite difficult to tell.

Hi,
I was back from long period trip on 3rd country. Sorry to cannot check the thread because my hotel that reservation was a 3 stars only. The menu said had fast speed wireless internet. But..... when I arrived hotel. It must use your private notebook to connect for the server. I had only small notebook on hand. The small hotel hadn't business centre for Paid/non-paid for the PC to connect interent. sorry for stop check the thread & very thanks to all of my friend to assistance. Pls see photos for gethering in thailand which use my ver.1 & 2 Dac.
thx

Ultimate Twin TDA1541a Non-oversampling DAC with tube buffer & reclock set...........
hi jleaman,
first I would like to know the dac had sound or not?? only sa sa??? or as you said lack of bass.
is the I/V resisters change to 47~68ohm already or not??
thx

Yes the dac has sound. When connected to the pot then amp it's just Quiet and not enough gain.
The dac tube buffer and all amps work just fine.

Hi jleaman,
what is the I/V resisters now using??
parallel for 22ohm=11ohm or change to 47~68 ohm already??
thx

THIS IS USE IN THE 1541A pcb OUTPUT ( I/V) FROM MONSAN IN THAILAND.
Hello Thomas and friends here,
It's not I/V stage. It's power supply unit. I replaced the R load on TL431 by simple CCS. This used to isolate all the shunt reg from each other and to make the current flow on pre-reg constant, I though this will reduce some intermodulation in supply.
Actually, you can used it with all TL431 supply in the Thomas's kit but the most improvement shown when you use it at -15V supply of TDA1541A and Analog supply of CS8412/8414. I often set the CCS current for 2-3 times that the load need. I had set it 10 times and little more transparency present, anyway I can't stand their hot and loss energy. So, 2-4 times should be compromise rate for me. So, if you would try this circuit, beware check that the transformer, follower supply equipment and pre-regulator can stand for those amount of current and also heat ventilation.
I'm try to design the discrete cascode CCS to replace this CCS. Hope it have a little improvement. If so, I'll share to Thomas later. Or if someone ever done it, please share to us.
For someone who used CD-PRO2. This supply is also effective for +5V and +9V. I feed 800mA to 5V supply and 1.5A for 9V supply. You will see that the disc spining is very very constant and the sound detail also improve. I done it with old CD-PRO2 about 3 years ago but hope it will effect the same with present CD-PRO2M.
Regards,
Monsan S. from Thailand.

Thomas,
I have lost my copy of the zip file could you resend it please
tube-lover said:Hi Jonathan,
sorry to late call back.
My english is bad so cannot actually reflex the meaning of the dac.
Pls check email for the zip file of the schmatic.
this is my website.
www.diyaudiocraft.com.
Actually the old version & the new version schmatic was same. But the parts & signal path was re0write the PCB to lower the capacitance, noise & shorter signal path to maintain the purity of the signal.
thx

I finished my DAC this past Saturday and I had it breaking in since. This morning I had a listen and the sound is excellent. The amount of information retrieved is quite amazing. And the sound is big, full and dynamic, yet detailed and delicate. I love it.
For now I'm just using the op-amp analog stage. I'll be building the tube stage soon.
I also intend to build the re-clock modules. Can anyone recommend a source for TCXO's? Thomas, do you have any?

Hi mark stones,
I cannot search your email,.
pls email to thomas@diyaudiocraft.com.
I will email U once again to U.
Julien_M,
pls check the 11.2896 2ppm TCXO contain in the parcel or not. If not. this is my mistake. I will post U back with the missing tube sockets.
If can wait a little bit of time. I had some Mita ,<1.25ppm
TCXO coming.
This is I prepare for the another project. I had some the latest ( made in Taiwan) selected date code 2002 TDA1541a CHIPS coming.
Philips Factory ( production line) in taiwan said the main different of this chips was use same process & procedure as the Old 1541a made for the chips but the machine & core material all were new, higer purity of melt-spun of the core material was use in NEW chips. They said these chips was after the 2S ( Double crown) selection fault out one. But the standard compare the old chips. The specification will better than the Old one. I had Old TDA1541a( made in Holland) & S1 to compare. I would like to say there had not large different between S1 & This New 1541a(m 2002 version). I will provide the factory receipt to diyers to take a look to proof that this is not remark chips.
Actually new chips will more smooth than old chips. But the dynamic Old chips will little better. If U like to know the large different. Old chips will little bit more musical than new one but new one had little more detail than old one.
I had 300pcs already on my hand. Will very good offer to diyers.
Hope more diyers can enjoy more reasonable items.!!!!
I will free to post one to U.
thx
thomas

Re: Ultimate Twin TDA1541a Non-oversampling DAC with tube buffer & reclock set...........
Hi Thomas.
I sent you an e-mail.
The DAC sounds really good. Sound stage is excellent: big and three dimensional.
I'm using a Sony DVD and a CD-PRO2M kit (with a Tent labs XO-3) as transports. They both sound excellent with the DAC. DVD movies are very dynamic!!
I'll start building the tube circuit this weekend. I'll also be building both re-clocking circuits soon once I order the necessary parts and get the TCXO from you. I'm curious to see how they influence the sound of this DAC.
I'll be happy to try your new TDA1541a and report back the results.
Thanks.
