Does the second one get attached to the top, to add rigidity ?
Is my thinking correct ?

If so, I understand.. In fact, the second baseplate (at the top) would be a perfect place to place heat generating items since they are close to the top, heat would escape much more quickly from the top.

The silver base plate (the second one) is bolted to the rails/brackets that are attached to the heatsinks.
It's there to make it easier to mount stuff to, as it has a stack of holes in it.

If you didn't purchase the additional steel plate then you would drill your own holes in the stock anodised black aluminium base plate

The 'other' baseplate is just a cover, not really useful for putting anything on, it is just aesthetic. It should be called 'base COVER' not base PLATE.

Incorrect.
Many people buy these cases and mount stuff to the stock 3mm aluminium plate.

That's why the steel plate is an additional extra - it's not necessary, it's just convenient

Wow.

I am very surprised that people mount anything to the base COVER. It does not really have any structural rigidity to hold anything substantial of weight. I would have thought EVERYONE would want the strong baseplate. I am very surprised.

In any case, to avoid ambiguity in the future, can we call one the BASEPLATE and the other, base COVER ?
That way everyone knows exactly what is being meant.

As you can see by the survey, from a response of 21 people, it's about 16 in favour of purchasing the additional steel plate and 5 in favour of not buying it.

I am very surprised. How do people think of attaching even a smallish transformer to that structure ? Everything would be warped & stressed...

If it was left to me, I would have even the baseplate at 3mm at least. But then again, I like to over-engineer everything.

ok, the base COVER is 3mm aluminium and the base steel PLATE is 1.5 mm no ?
Calling both of them 'plate' is confusing. This is where the source of my confusion came from all along: Calling them both 'plate'.
I will call the outermost one 'COVER" (after all, is it not exactly the same as the top COVER ?) and the strong steel inner plate the 'PLATE'.

I meant to say that I would make the base steel plate at least 3 mm 🙂

In any case, please put me down as guaranteed buyer for the 4U 500mm deluxe WITH the steel strong base PLATE and UMS 500mm heatsinks and the holed/puched BACK plate.
