Hello, I would like to have the expert's opinion on what I have chosen for my UCD project.
One transformer (I think I'll go with the 160VA round corner transformer suggested by Peter).
Two separate bridge rectifiers (4 MUR860 decoupled with 1 Black Gate non polar 4,7uf/50V).
One 10000uf/63V per rail (Nichicon KG Super, wich are reasonably priced).
What do you think?
Thank you

Hypex announced PSUs
Hi,
till now I was a passive member of this thread and I learned a lot from it. Jan-Peter announced that they would provide complete PSUs in the future. This seems to be the best solution for me since I'm a DIY newbie, I just saves me ordering caps, tranformer etc. from different places, paying shipping costs for every item. The only thing I wanna know: how long will it still take approx. ?
He announced it in August if I'm right, and when they don't come in the near future, I'll be forced to do it myself.
Do you guys know any comparable sites like schuro.de, who offer complete PSU sets ?
Cheers,
Bob Lorentz
PS @ Bruno: I am very pleased that you are a lecturer at the AES-NL conference, just got the news today !! 🙂

ad8620 upgrade
I noticed that both ucd180 and 400 now comes with AD8620 upgrade. I am just wondering if this need a separate power other than the PSU for the main UCD borad?
Thanks

Ackcheng,
Indeed we have a new option for upgrading the UcD modules with the AD8620 op amp. But you don't need an extra powersupply, this is already on the PCB 😉

Jan-Peter

What do you get from ordering the modules with the AD8620 opamp instead of the standard one? Lower distortion? Different input impedance? Tubelike euphonics? Eternal happines? 🙂
A lot of customers claim a better Audiophile sound......😀
In comparing with the NE5532 or even the OPA2134. Everybody is free to go for this upgrade or not.
In a way the UcD modules with the standard op amp do sound already quit ok.

Power supply question for Bruno and/or Jan-Peter:
If I understand well one can use big power supply caps without any other smaller caps to smooth out ripple current because this function is already present in the UCD modules
😕
Does anyone know where to buy these famous Epcos Sikorel big caps?
Thanks
Mauricio

HI
I asked this in the UcD 400 thread, but no answer. It is probably more relevant here, so:
Would it be possible, if one only wants to drive the modules from a unbalanced source , to ground the - input of the UcD driver (thru 1.8 K?) and connect the + to the source, thereby bypass both the op-amp and the two 22uF ?

Koldby,
We don't recommend this! Please remove the opamp and put wires between the modulator and the inputconnector. For best performance you must make the asymmetrical connection by the source!

Thanks Rha61:
Yes. Audioxcel is the only source that I found. These are big caps
( 22000uF
) , that's why I asked before about the need for other smaller filtering caps after them. I want to confirm if this is unnecessary due to filtering/regulation present on the UCD module.

Broken UcD 180
Hi!
When I was trying to make a bridged amp with two UcD180
I was a bit to quick, and connected the power with charge on the caps. (First I connected the supply Gnd and a big spark when I connected the + supply)
One of the modules broke down.
What might have broken, and is it likely that it cold be repaired?
Best Regards AndyB

AndyB,
not smart, always discharge the capacitors to 0-volt, and then connect the amplifiers. This counts for ALL amplifiers also the UcD modules.......
We can repair them 😀
Please mail me for a private solution.

Maxlorenz,
In Bruno's reference amplifier he uses 2 times 4700uF. You don't have to go for the biggest caps what you can find.

Jan-Peter:
I know, I know. It's just that I have a hunch about these caps. My horoscope said that I must follow my hunches 😉 and beside, I only found these 22000uF caps. If I could get smaller ones I would be glad.
And again, I could use these cans afterwards in a UCD400 project, wright? 🙂
Would you be kind and tell us, humble beginners, if we need smaller caps after these large cans?
Here I am, soldering and connecting everything... 😎
Regards
Mauricio
