Congrats on retiring, my good friend retired from Linear Tech and I wish I could get him interested in diy audio. Retirement allows use to expend as much time on our projects as we care. You can get along fine with one layer and produce a fine amp, however with more investment in more layers and more complex layout you can change the size shape and optimize your design to infinite proportions. With the wolverine amp ( solid state forum) they are spending more time on circuit board design and is an interesting read, though it has not made it to fruition. I have to admit beside the functionality of the million vias they just look cool to me.
