But living in the now poses other challenges 🙂
Suppose for a minute to have all stuff with standardized signal levels, mounted in 1 tiny audio rack and connected to 2 loudspeakers in stereo. All with relatively short cabling and equipment within reach.

That would not be doable for me given the space I have and the nosiy relays the preamp uses for its volume control.
Two reasons I can't.
1. Noisy relays in preamp which I don't want to hear when changing the volume level.
2. No place in the room to put a rack of equipment.

Do you change volume continuously? And a clicks of relays are worse than having mono sound by a humming setup?
How large is the room (in meters!)?

Not continuously all the time unless I'm listening to YouTube or Apple Music where I have to adjust for the normal volume changes between different sounds.
Yes the relay clicks are quite loud.
The room size is about
3.7M L
3.7M W
2.1 M H
All are listed from left to right.
On one wall I have:
1. Closet door.
2. Console radio.
3. Stand with a 32" TV on it
4. Speaker with amp angled in the corner.
On the wall to the right I have:
1. Long side of full sized bed
2. Window
On the next wall to the right I have:
1. Short side of full sized bed.
2. Bedside table.
3. Floor lamp.
4. Room door.
On the last wall to the right I have:
1. Space for room door to open.
2. Clothes hamper.
3. Chest of drawers where my phon o and 45 player sit on top of.
4. TV tray for things like my wallet, keys ETC...
5. Space for closet door to open.
The long edge of the bed takes up a little over half of the wall.
The short edge of the bed takes up around 30% of the wall.
The mono setup is fine as I've got no room whatsoever for stereo speakers unless they are small enough to where I need a sub which I have no room for.
The system no longer hums.

You got me stepping out 3.7 x 3.7 meters in my room and I did not even know my living room is 5 x 6 meters 🙂 It is small indeed but things should be possible when mounting a rack to the wall (if it is a stone wall).
In small rooms the walls usually are the places to install things to. Comes with the size limits. When I help someone installing such stuff wall brackets, wall planks and whatever these are called in English are the weapons of choice. Stuff that is put on the floor or on tables/cabinets is creating obstacles and usually not in anyones/anythings benefit. Cabling better said hiding/tidying cabling a tough challenge.
The toughest challenge though is creating the feeling of having space in a small room. Maybe possibly a large tube amplifier is not what optimally fits in such a small room. Do you see the paradox? I have space in abundance but focus on having smallest and least intrusive audio stuff.

I see, however the tube amp works well with the speaker I'm using and I just do have space for that speaker.
That are system choices technically/practically unfit for the available space and relatively normal standards. But it keeps you busy.
I have a garage and bought a small car not expecting any issues. The previous owner installed central heating in the garage as apparently he did not want his car to catch a cold. I take this was his sole & stubborn design key parameter as there is no space to work there or the like. So he extended the existing heatings water piping by 2 x 5 meters through the ground which costs energy just like heating the garage. The garage was wide enough but the installed tube radiators prevent car doors to be opened normally. For sure he noticed this too with his golden horse and then mounted the radiators in reverse. Still the car doors of a small car can not be opened normally. The key design parameter was met but everything else is non optimal. System choices, never what you really want when looking at them from various angles.
