It will be sold as a fully assembled board. The xmos chip is an BGA package, we have no possibility to test it when it is not fully assembled.
The output stage will be an add on module, so that you can build your own filter or opamp solution "discrete" or "chip opamp".
We could have chosen to make space for passive voltage regulators but the ones i use is superior to the most.
If somebody wants to use an I2S interface with this DAC, they need to program the DAC depending on the mode they wants to use either through SPI or I2C..
All this is part of the firmware in the xmos chip..
If i would choose to provide I2S only then i think it is waste of an good chip.
DSD is only available to the DAC with prober DSD signal .. I2S does not provide it.
I have not found any AK4490 DIY kit other than DIYHK.
How does the board look, dimensions etc?

The same size as the phison dac posted. Only the crossed areas are removed.
So the board is similar in size 100x130mm.
We deliver an cable harness for the power like on the picture.
For power i use an power supply from XP power right now: ECL15TU03... But any type can be used.. Meanwell T-60C for example....

I love the sound of the AK4396 and my friend has a AK4490 and it is really detailed and very musical DAC. For those who never tried the AK4490 you should pick one up, Sonny's price is really good.

I need a good DAC. But I dont understand. Will all the crossed over areas just be blank PCB taking up space?

The Final board size we made yesterday evening is 71x110mm
As you can see there is added the power connector J7, and two new connectors
The new connectors did not change the price, but it add possibilities for future upgrade.
J4 - Frontpanel connector for samplerate for PCM and DSD, buttons, volume wheel.
J5 - Preamp connector for feeding an preamp module with +/-15VDC, +5.5VDC, I2C and SPI for io expansion -> Relay switching input, attenuator..

Ok thanks. So if I want to mount this in a preamp build I am underway building, containing a riaa stage (FSP), an Select & Volume | AKOUO Audio Solutions | DIY | Sabre | JRC | MUSES72320 and a B1 buffer (DCB1) , what else do I need in terms of amplification?
Yes. The outputstage is mounted on top of the PCB, thats why you cannot see the opamps...
The outputstage board is 40x70mm and mounted on the 4 lower mounting holes.

So any new outputstage can be fitted when it comes out, or you can build your own outputstage and mount on top of the USB DAC board. Max freedom here...
Interested for this dac.You mentioned the Meanwell T-60C power supply. This one looks same and should work too? It´s easier to available.

Cool. Then I am most likely interested in the early bird!
One more question. I can not mount the board in the back. So I will need to extend the USB. Will that cause any problems?

So, you mean you will develop a preamp to match this DAC board?
So, you mean you will develop a preamp to match this DAC board?
"Outputstage" as I take it.
So, you mean you will develop a preamp to match this DAC board?
There is 3 options here.
1) fixed output stage on top of dac board
2) preamp on the side and a fixed output stage on top of the dac connected to the preamp as an extra lineinput
3) variabel outputstage (cable from preamp connector to the outputstage board)
3. Option does not have extra Line inputs but are cheaper than the 2. Option
I hope it clears some of the questions

Hi Sonny, many thanks.
Would you please tell us what OPAMP and oscillator you pick up and do you have a design of galvonic isolation for USB input?
Oscillator is foxcon fxo-hc736r... But the oscillator has its own low noise ldo, also we use Line matching.
Opamp is ada4627-1... Works Best with ak4490.
No i do not use galvanic isolation ... They ADD several nseconds pulswitdth distortion.
