Troels C17 modifications

Oh, so they still make those? Tweeter seems familiar too 🙂
I measured the TSP of a C17WG from the Dali 104 some time ago, and added two different magnets (one bigger and one smaller). Below is what I got. Not a very scientific test (quick and dirty) but it indicates the Q and what happens with added magnets.

The Dali 104 cabinets are very resonant and not braced. The walls should have asymmetrical ribs (stiff glue) and bracing (soft glue) together with damping pads.
Added magnet is a good idea (Troels did that). The stuffing in Dali 104 is something different: Acoustilux along the walls and around the upper 6,5" while the lower 6,5" are not "dressed" and breathes more free against the BR-port. For the Living Voice they did lower the xo- frequency relative to Dali 104. I may suggest that the Vifa Xt25TG30-04 will be very appropriate (fs=436) for this purpose, even frequency response and nice waterfall. While refoaming the C17WG, you may also add felt to dampen the pole piece. I'll do that as the dust caps are broken and need to be replaced. I bought the surround and dust caps from Speakerrepairshop as Cbarth refereed to.

What amplifier are you using?
In my living room I have a Yamaha 3067 receiver and in my listening space I have Roksan Blak. The Yamaha is quite a bit heavier, but gives what you say boomy, flappy bass. But with the Roksan the bass is much more controlled and tuneful.

I actually cut out the baffles of those cabinets and have a removable baffle on them now. Tested some 8" peerless drivers in them before. I added some braces and glued some floor tiles on the walls, that improved them significantly.

Have you seen (measured) improvement from the pole piece mod? Just wondering if it's worth the trouble.

I think the XT distortion can be a bit problematic with low XO, especially without wave guide, but could sound nice if not played loud.
Speakerrepairshop did not have the correct surrounds for my C17's, that's where I got the two sets that did not fit I mentioned earlier. That's why I ordered these: Foam surround for repair Vifa C17WG-29
Hope they fit.

I have (too) many amps.. most of them DIY. My favorite lately is a modified JLH class A. However, it's struggling a little bit with these C17's dipping below 4ohm in the bass. I'm working on some Troels PMS-inspired speakers now that should be an easier load for the JLH. My first wide baffle build. I'm already on the third version, waiting for some new tweeters.

In general I don't like high Q bass alignments, I found I prefer low Q, closer to 0,5 in closed boxes. If I had the space I would probably have some big woofers with light cones and heavy magnets in large closed cabinets..

I did a search on surrounds again, and found these (also in Holland):
Foam surround for repair Vifa C17WG-29

I ordered 4pcs, hope they fit better.

No luck with these either. I don't get it, why the cone diameter does not match. These were the third batch of C17 surrounds I got. I had to cut down the cone a couple of mm's to make it fit, and I was not able to cut the cone perfectly round, so it looks awful, but works..
