I'll second this one! 😛 It sounds very, very good and is sufficiently expensive outside of Russia to justify the trouble.

Many surplus Russian tubes are available worldwide quite cheaply so it pays to be choosy and grab types that are less common and more expensive in Japan. Take a look at what tubes are available on eBay and what their typical cost with shipping would be. Look for the rarer and more expensive types, and not necessarily just triodes. 4P1L would certainly also make this list IMHO..

Also, now lots of miniature military tubes are available: 6N16B (tiny version of 6N1P), 6N17B (tiny version of 6N2P), and so on... Nice pentodes of similar pen-size: 6J32B, 6J5B, 6J9B. Even tiny power pentodes like 6P30B.

Metal-film resistors are available, like used by military MLT, C2-23, C2-22, or even non-inductive wirewound PTMN.

Capacitors, as well... Silver mica; hermetical silver mica, polyester, paper in oil... Except electrolytics: they are not good. Except, may be, used by military K50-29, but they are still expensive.

Edit: Ohh, I almost forgot about the best tube for mic preamps and MC phono inputs I ever saw: 6S17K-V.

Yet another vote for 6S4S ( 6С4С ). This is a good tube.

It's an equivalent of 6B4G, different base and filament voltage to a 2a3 but otherwise similar. It could be used as an output tube - particularly in push-pull. It could be used as a driver for a 300B SET through a nice interstage transformer like a Hammond 126C. It could be used as a preamp tube again through a nice output transformer like a Hammond 126C. Very versatile and good value. Heck, you could make a three stage amp with just these tubes, and it would sound good!! Get a dozen!!
